BEFORE PETERSBURGH: The Rebels Get Between the Second and Sixth Corps; A SEVERE ENGAGMENT FOLLOWS (6/26/1864)

Particulars of the Attack upon the Second Corps on Wednesday -- One Thousand and Prisoners Reported Captured by the Rebels -- Our Loss in Killed and Wounded Fifteen Hundred -- The Lost Ground Recovered -- Preparations to Destroy the Weldon Railroads.

HEADQUARTERS OF THE ARMY OF THE POTOMAC, Thursday, June 29 -- P.M.

The attack upon the Second Corps on Wednesday near the Weldon Railroad, did not result so disastrously as at first supposed.

The line was formed by BARLOW's division being on the left, BINNEY's (MOTT in command) in the centre, and GIBBONS' on the right.

It was expected that the Sixth Corps would have arrested on the left with BARLOW, but it seems quite a gap was left, into which A.P. HILL's rebel corps entered, and, before our men were aware of it, they received a volley from the rear, which created a panic in our ranks and caused a rapid retreat to the woods in the rear of the Third Division. This left the flank of the Third Division unprotected, and the enemy, taking advantage of it, charged through [???] into our rifle pits, ordering the men to surrender.

The troops, however, left the tranches and fell back rapidly, but many of them were captured, and quite a number were killed and wounded before they get away.

The number of our loss in prisoners is reported at one thousand, while some make the figure higher.

Our loss in killed and wounded is probably fifteen hundred.

Some of our officers engaged in this fight had just joined their commands after being exchanged, and when surrounded and ordered to surrender, replied, "Never! Death rather than [???] Libby Prison!" and fighting their way out as best they could, many of them succeeded in getting back into our lines.

Eyestrain Wednesday edition. Sorry about that. Pages 1 and 4 (editorial page) of the Times Machine version have bad print like we haven’t seen for a year or more. Happily, it is a one off and tomorrow we will be back to the legible copy – HJS.

Hi Professor.

Has the NYT retracted their reporting of two weeks ago regarding Petersburg’s surrender?

6/19 “PETERSBURG CAPTURED”
6/20 “Later unofficial dispatches show that as of 8 o’clock this morning the enemy still occupied Petersburgh.”
