WASHINGTON, Thursday, June 23.
A dispatch from the Army of the Potomac, of Wednesday morning, June 22, says that no serious fighting has occurred since the night attack on Sunday night. Our line extends from the Appomattox River, on the right, to the Petersburgh and Weldon Railroad on the left. We do not hold the railroad, but have a battery commanding the bridge which our shells have made impassable. No trains are running.
A wounded, officer, who arrived by the Lizzie Baker, says SHERIDAN had a fight on Tuesday with HAMPTON and FITZ LEE at White House. The rebels being dismounted in the first attack, they threw our men into temporary confusion, but they soon rallied and drove the rebels two miles.
Position of Affairs on Wednesday--Gen. Hancock Improving--Capture of a Rebel Colonel and Other Prisoners.
HEADQUARTERS, Wednesday, June 22 -- 5 A.M.
Artillery firing on the right, and picket skirmishing at various points along the line, the whole of yesterday, resulting in the wounding of a few men, but causing no change in the position. A battery stationed on an elevated piece of ground in front of Petersburgh kept annoying one of our batteries on the left for some time, when it opened in return; one of the shells exploding in the midst of the men at the rebel guns, and causing a cessation of firing on their part.
Gen. HANCOCK is recovering from his indisposition, and expects to resume the command of his corps in a few days.
President LINCOLN paid a visit to Gen. GRANT at City Point yesterday.
