Russia's armed forces suffered a new blow today when its air defences shot down one of its own military helicopters near the war zone.
The latest friendly fire nightmare resulted in the death of all four crew members, it was reported.
The £19 million Ka-29 assault helicopter was on duty hunting for Ukrainian kamikaze sea drones near Black Sea resort Anapa this morning when it was hit by a Russian Pantsir medium-range surface-to-air missile in an incident of mistaken targeting.
The Russians blamed the blunder on a malfunction of the 'friend or foe' identification system.

Join and laugh at the humor Zeepers provide!!
Now that the US overplayed its diplomatic hand, Russia is employing head turning diplomacy leaving US Intel, State and Washington shocked at how Russia is finding friends which they never game planned.
Russia will use July to smash whats left of 375,000 Ukrainian soldiers.
Friendly Fire Ain’t Friendly, as we used to say in the Vietnam era.
Yup... But she didn’t shoot a Ukrainian helicopter out of the sky... Did she?
Friendly fire goes both ways in all wars.
They do have slave camps, starvation and no electricity.
LOL - look at the foreign zeeper defending Zelenska’s $40K Paris shopping spree while Ukraine demanded more money from the U.S.
These leftists are bizarre. No logic.
Only a Canadian leftist such as you believe what Will Stewart writes for the Daily Mail
That’s your UK Daily Tabloids report for today.
From the beginning we have been arguing with mostly foreigners, none of whom have a sense of humor.
IFF failure? Something is wrong.
NATO and Russian (and Chinese, a knock off of Russian models) IFF use encrypted interrogations so that the aircraft does not respond unless the interrogator is a friendly. Air defense systems will not over interrogate* to prevent enemies from triangulating on an encrypted reply.
The Ka-29 may have turned off his transponder to prevent being detected by Ukrainians, he may have been using the wrong key, the Panstir may have been using the wrong key, or there could have been an equipment failure, on the aircraft or ground equipment.
A couple of friendly fire incidents in the Gulf War were attributable to coalition aircraft not replying to IFF, a serious mistake in an environment where friendly fire is much more likely than hostile.
The Pantsir is considered a piece of crap, but better than nothing, as long as your life doesn’t depend on it.
*Civilian “IFF” - secondary radar - interrogate with about 1000 unencrypted pulses per second, and match transponder replies to primary radar echoes. Military IFF only interrogate intermittently, and only for targets whose identity is in doubt, and needs to be established. Establishing identity before shooting is considered mandatory, of course. An unidentified target not replying to interrogations is likely to be hostile. Since the Pantsir is so vulnerable, no wonder the operators would be trigger happy.
As mentioned elsewhere, yesterday was release of the annual bible of energy by BP, via EnergyInst.org. BP has done this for 70 years and so far there is no indication this new .org left wing group are tampering with numbers they are given.
Ukraine’s oil consumption 2023 was 220K barrels/day. This number has been in decline for decades. More important, and interesting, it is not up particularly since 2022. Quite flat, less than 1%.
Russia’s oil consumption is a much larger base of multiple millions of barrels/day, and it was up in 2023 just 1%.
Surprising lesson — tanks burn enormous amounts of diesel, but there simply are not many of them and when they must travel significant distance they do so by train.
Russia’s natgas production was down 5% last year. As was the UK and Norway. This looks like noise. No significant loss of customers for them. More importantly for oil because of the most gasp worthy part of the data —
China’s 2023 oil consumption was up over 10% (!!!) to 16.8 million barrels/day. The US is at 19 mbpd up about 0.6%. China will soon be the dominant oil consumer on Earth, there is likely nothing that can be done about this (those EVs over there must run on oil) and . . . the key point here is they are getting that oil from Russia. Their growth in consumption is met by Russia, who seem to have successfully found other customers for their oil. Note that India oil consumption was also up 5% last year, also from Russia.
Oil is everything. Natural gas is whatever is left after oil is everything.
