Hard Fighting There Wednesday Morning--The Army of the Potomac All Across the James.
Special Dispatch to the New-York Times.
WASHINGTON, Thursday, June 16.
One of Gen. GRANT'S couriers who arrived here this morning from Bermuda Hundred, with dispatches for the Government, says that when he left there on yesterday morning, (Wednesday, the 15th,) fighting was going on in the vicinity of Petersburgh. The cannonading and musketry firing, which could be distinctly heard at the Landing, began at early dawn. It was very heavy, and appeared to be momentarily increasing in severity.
Gen. GRANT's whole army was across the James -- its rear several miles west of Bermuda Hundred. The whole of SMITH's corps had arrived. Several thousand fresh reinforcements had reached Bermuda, and more were coming up the river. The Fifth Corps had the advance.
He thinks that Petersburgh before this is in our hands, as the rebels had but at comparatively small force there to defend it.
Nothing had been heard from SHERIDAN.
Transports, laden with supplies, were arriving continually at Bermuda Hundred, &c.
FROM THE SOUTH SIDE.; Arrival of the Eighteenth Corps--Another Movement upon Petersburgh--Crossing of the James by the Army of the Potomac.
From our Special Correspondent.
HEADQUARTERS, BERMUDA HUNDRED, Va., Wednesday, June 15 -- 2 A.M.
The Eighteenth Army Corps, (Gen. SMITH,) detached from the Army of the Potomac, embarked at White House, on the Pamunky, on Monday noon, and rejoined Gen. BUTLER'S command last evening, landing at Point of Rocks, on the Appomattox River.
On reporting to Gen. BUTLER, an order was immediately issued to Gen. SMITH, to move at 2 A.M. this morning upon Petersburgh, in conjunction with a strong cavalry force under KAUTZ.

Is this the last hurrah for Santa Anna?
Or maybe the inaugural Alamo Bowl parade.
Good morning professor.
I was stationed at Ft. Lee after my last overseas tour.
PT every morning ran through Petersburg National battlefield.
The “Crater” was hugh (and serious).
Grant thought Petersburg wouldn’t be that much time or effort.

What do you mean? Grant took Petersburg today. At least, that's the word in NY City.
LOL.
