So if Alex Jones is sued for $1 billion for telling a supposed falsehood about Sandy Hook - why aren’t CNN, MSNBC, ABC, NBC, NY Times, WaPo sued for $100 billion for telling falsehoods about almost literally everything?

He slandered the parents by claiming that they were in on the plan to slaughter their children. He didn’t ask if they were or leave a shred of doubt by stating that they might have had a hand in it.
He said outright that they were involved.
That’s not free speech. He didn’t guard his words well enough.
Alex Jones is pretty much scum in my book but I cannot fathom him facing a $1.5 BILLION judgment. No matter how much an objectionable idiot he is, that is excessive.
How hard is it for him to start over?

The parents did exactly that and proved they were harmed and judgement was rendered.
It sounds like the system worked in Alex Jones case.
Fundamentally, it’s his fault. He knew how far he could take a conspiracy and stay within the law while talking about it. He knew that the parents would be listening to him and hoping that he would cross the line.
Their patience paid off.

If he kept his mouth in check, he would not have been sued by the parents of Sandy Hook. If he kept his ego in check and followed court procedure, presented documents and evidence to the court as required, he would not have been held in contempt and had default judgments.
Jones brought this on himself.
