John Mannion, a New York state senator, is currently running for congressional office. And in a new campaign ad, he made an incredible claim about his mother allegedly being forced to carry a stillborn baby for two months prior to Roe v. Wade.
In the ad, titled “Mother,” Mannion spoke about a tragic stillbirth his mother experienced in the 1960s. “Before she passed away, my mother shared her most painful memory,” Mannion said in the ad. “See, before I was born, she lost her pregnancy at seven months. That was before Roe v. Wade. So, she was forced to carry the fetus for another two months and deliver a stillborn baby. It was torture. And now MAGA Republicans are trying to take us back to that. That’s why I helped pass some of the strongest abortion protections in the nation and I’ll do the same in Congress.”
No law in the country disallows the treatment of miscarriage or delivery of a stillborn (deceased) baby. An induced abortion (which is what pro-life laws restrict) intentionally kills a human being in the womb; a miscarriage or stillbirth is the accidental and unintentional death of a child in the womb.
Mannion further spoke to syracuse.com about it, saying his mother suffered three miscarriages before he was born, but that the stillbirth at seven months was the most painful. “She was upset about it, and I know it had an impact on her. It was kind of surprising to me that she would talk about her miscarriage and having to carry the fetus around for two months,” he said. “She was not allowed to deliver. And the impact of spending two months carrying around a dead fetus had to be awful. She said she suffered.”
The story is uncannily similar to one shared by Rep. Frederica Wilson, who likewise claimed a pre-Roe law prevented doctors from delivering her stillborn baby. Yet this claim is a strange one to make, considering that in both cases, the preborn baby was already deceased.
Delivering the deceased baby’s body was not then (and would not be now) considered an induced abortion under the law. In an induced abortion, the intent is to kill the preborn child. As Dr. Donna Harrison, Director of Research for the American Association of Pro-Life OBGYNs (AAPLOG), previously told Live Action News, “There is no law now, nor has there ever been any law in any of the states of the United States, which prohibits the treatment of miscarriage.”
But was not inducing delivery perhaps an indication of medical malpractice?
As the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) points out, immediate delivery is not always necessary. “The method and timing of delivery after a stillbirth depend on the gestational age at which the death occurred, maternal obstetric history (eg, previous hysterotomy), and maternal preference,” their clinical guidance says. “Although most patients desire prompt delivery, the timing of delivery is not critical; coagulopathies associated with prolonged fetal retention are uncommon.”
Essentially, though it is undoubtedly emotionally painful for a mother to know her preborn baby has died, her life may not be at immediate risk. While it’s impossible to know why labor was not induced in these cases, neither of them is an argument in favor of abortion — the intentional and direct killing of a living human being in the womb.
As Dr. Harrison said, “The laws regulating abortion only regulate the intentional killing of human beings in the womb. If a woman had a baby who had died in the womb, there was never any law which prohibited caring for her.”
We can safely call “unadulterated bullspit” on Mannion’s claim. But the simpering, empty-headed, pro-satan, progressive zealots will run wild with the claim.
Removing a dad fetus is NOT an abortion; it is a legitimate medical procedure. I call BS.
Removing a dead fetus is NOT an abortion; it is a legitimate medical procedure. I call BS.
He’s lying. The body knows the fetus is dead and and expels the fetus with what would be termed a normal labor and delivery.
It happed to my daughter twice. It isn’t an abortion if the baby is already dead.
The fetus is not “rotting”. My sister was carrying twins when an amniocentesis test killed one of the babies. She carried the baby’s body until term with no problems.
My daughter experienced the death of a twin also, and she carried that baby to term with no harm to her health.
This “rotting” body is the leftist’s latest lie to force a loophole they can exploit.
Mine was based on men being political on women's pains. They can't know what they're talking about. A headache they can understand but anything about a pregnancy... no. Abortion...no. Amputation... yes. Menstruation...no. A toothache..yes. Hot flashes...no. A broken leg...yes.
This guy Mannion is using his mom's supposed experience to gain votes. Supposed because we do not have proof if his mother actually carried a stillborn. D's lie. Why didn't his mom do something about the issue?
Do you see my point?
Not true.
How would it decompose when it’s still in the same environment that kept it nourished, and indeed might still be nourishing a twin?
It does not decay in the uterus. It is in the same environment that nourishes it.
I have twice witnessed the situation of the death of one twin in utero, while the living twin goes on the full term, with the mother experiencing a normal birth. The dead fetus did not rot, the surviving twin was normal and the mother did not experience any physical harm from carrying the fetus after death.
You should know that one of those pregnancies resulted in the mother carrying the dead baby for 7 months.
The fetus is dead in its mother’s womb. It will decompose.
As we can see on this thread, there are many different flavors of this situation., and lying Democrat politicians who can't tell the difference between a man and a woman (because they're not biologists) should STFU.
The fact that Mannion is himself male while his mother was female is irrelevant. And it is no worse than, say, Biden referencing his having marched with and been arrested together with Martin Luther King, Jr., or having sat in prison next to Nelson Mandela, or driven an 18-wheeler.
They are all lies, to be sure - but why bother attempting to disprove them? It's much easier and more elegant to simply point out that they are non sequiturs, as well as "Appeals to Authority" (namely: to himself).
Mine was based on men being political on women's pains. They can't know what they're talking about. A headache they can understand but anything about a pregnancy... no. Abortion...no. Amputation... yes. Menstruation...no. A toothache..yes. Hot flashes...no. A broken leg...yes.
Modern leftists take this one step further (catchword: Intersectionality) and claim that a heterosexual White man doesn't have the "lived experience" of, say, a homosexual Hispanic man... They essentially want to atomize society to the point that we have a myriad categories of human beings, all bearing different labels, so that no one is "allowed" to speak out against / on what someone else is saying - effectively paralyzing the democratic process.
So that, when it comes to voting on, say, a School Lunch Proposition, or even a Solar-Powered Pedestrian "Walk / Don't Walk" Sign Initiative, no one but single Black mothers or (respectively) wheelchair-bound drug addicts who frequent the South Side Free Clinic are "allowed" to voice an opinion about it.
So please accept a well-intentioned chiding from a fellow FReeper on your position re. "men being political on women's pains." The problem is: It doesn't stop there.
But thank you anyway for your kind words!
Regards,
It didn’t decompose in my sister or my daughter. As I said, I have witnessed this twice. The conditions necessary for decomposition are not present in the womb during a pregnancy. If they were pregnancy would be very risky indeed.
How long did your wife and daughter carry their deceased fetuses, before they were removed (by labor or physicians)?
Sister and daughter, and I’m a woman. My sister carried hers for 6 months and my daughter for almost 8. Additionally, I had another daughter who had two fetus’s die at five months. In both cases her body went into labor with several hours after the dr. failed to find a heartbeat.
