There is known to be a strong defensive line parallel to the canal where it crosses north to south through the town. Russian forces are assessed to have advanced around the southern end of the trench line and are already on the other side of the canal at the southern edge of town. No reason they would try an actual frontal assault across the canal.

Doubtful that this report, unofficially from one soldier in a tv interview, means too much. Sounds like they may have engaged a small unit of Russian troops on the eastern side of the canal, inflicted casualties, blown up an armored vehicle. Newsweek must be hungry for some good news from the battlefront to make this sound like a disaster.
