Just over 1,000 new electric cars were sold here in May, down over 39% on the same month last year.

This is the fourth month in a row that new EV sales have dropped.

New figures from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) show that just over 10,000 new EVs have been registered across the country so far this year, down almost 22% on the same period in 2023.

Petrol cars continue to lead the new car market, with a share of over 33%, followed by diesel at 23%, hybrid (petrol electric) at around 20%, electric at just under 13% and plug-in electric hybrid at just under 9%. […]

Volkswagen was the top selling new EV brand, followed by Tesla, Hyundai, BYD and Kia. …

I just looked it up. The longest distance between borders in Ireland is 171 miles. Sounds like the perfect place for EVs.

The next step by these climate loons... Forced EV purchases and the elimination of perfectly usable and drivable combustible engines.

If you get caught driving a model T down the road, fines and jail time for you.

New car buyers do not think so.

Good point. And perhaps it is that simple. I'd research the cold weather in Ireland, though. One reason my wife and I got an EV as one of our cars is because we live in the warm southeastern U.S. Even if the EV still gets you from point A to point B in the harsh cold, the cold might greatly reduce the miles/kWh throughput to make it cost as much or more to charge the EV than driving with a gas car. (Admittedly I don't know if that's true -- I didn't research the math on it because it didn't apply to me.)

Have MG and Triumph started making EVs yet?

How about Lotus?

That is the whole idea, don’t you know?

Lotus does. Not sure about the others.
The 100,000+ price tag is a bit steep.

Becoming more uncommon there, but a very few have their wits about them.

Curious enough but how are all other new car sales doing? Up? Flat? Or also down 39%?

Ford lost 1.3 billion on sales of 10,000 vehicles during the first quarter of 2024. That’s a breathtaking $132,000 on every vehicle sold!!!! Something has to give. Needless to say if you own Ford stock vote for the Donald.

Well this could become a “hot” issue…Ireland is surrounded by ocean. There are plenty of storms in the North Atlantic.

That means lots of salt spray.

Let’s just say after a nor’easter goes through there are plenty of transformers that blow.

What’s to say the EVs won’t do the same?

Management by committee is always inclined to failure. And government management/central planning is the worst kind of management by committee.

The article mentions the MG4 being #5 in terms of EV sales there. This is a Chinese vehicle manufactured by SAIC Motor (Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation).

I added up all the various power options, and got a figure of 98% - what powers the other 2% of vehicles, or was that a rounding error?

Perhaps something like the double roller propelled by foot power as used by Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble makes up the difference.

With the upcoming Bidenomics worldwide, we can all afford a pair of Lotus elans to drive ourselves to that high paying job. I myself plan to get a Jag XKE. No pushbuttons, all toggle switches and dials and no f’n digital readouts. Spoked wheels and knock off hubs. As my backup car I will have an Austin-Healy with removable hardtop. No padded steering wheels please.
