China delivered a devastating blow to Russia's economic prospects after refusing to commit to a Kremlin deal over future gas exports.

The Kremlin saw its gas revenues severely hit by its decision to invade Ukraine, as European countries started to introduce bans on Russian energy exports in the aftermath of the war.

Gas and oil pipeline flows to Europe have plummeted by more than eighty percent since 2022, with the state energy company Gazprom taking a US$6.9billion (£5.4billion) hit to its finances.

I showed you guys the same report re the Russian-Chinese negotiations from a trade journal - “Offshore Technology” an oil and gas journal. I like trade journals, their audience (engineers and managers) is not looking for political endorphin hits, nor are their publishers trying to make political points.

https://www.offshore-technology.com/news/russia-china-gas-pipeline-talks/

You can search more and find the same from other sources.

I suggest you all follow up specifics in reports you doubt. I have found in most cases that specifics are normally not wrong, it is the context in which they are placed and how the piece is “spun”.

There is of course the uncommon case where the facts are wrong. Its much more common in wartime from official sources. But if you find one its a bit of a coup.

China is not set up to use natural gas for the most part.
It will have to build out a distribution system, etc.
China uses mostly coal and nearly all domestic heating there is electricity.

Gas is a nice to have, but not a have to have.

The back story is China announced they would stand together with Russia against the US and EU for Justice. China is now going to support Russia after Biden diplomatic initiatives in May pissed China off. The Express doesn’t want readers to know China and Russia are now allied.
