Who do you think invented this kind of propoganda. Orwell’s 1984 isn’t fiction. It’s based upon experience working for the BBC during the war.

April 23, 2024 (Reuters) - Russia's economy ministry improved its expectations for 2024 gross domestic product (GDP) growth to 2.8% from 2.3% in new forecasts published on Tuesday.

The International Monetary Fund this month raised its 2024 forecast for Russia's GDP growth to 3.2% from the 2.6% projected in January, pointing to strong government spending and investment related to the war, as well as higher consumer spending in a tight labour market and strong oil export revenues in spite of Western sanctions.

It’s pretty common in the world of oil and gas to preface comments with “here are the facts” and then reference as a source some reporter — who doesn’t provide his source.

Here is the bible of oil. Has been for about 70 yrs. If you care about this stuff, download this rather large spreadsheet and click tabs. They have oil production, reserves, consumption, crude and condensate to and fro, NGLs (natural gas liquids) — look just get it, it’s the bible of energy.

BP has produced this for 70 years and they have outsourced it now, though providing the numbers:

https://www.energyinst.org/statistical-review scroll to the orange links, I recommend spreadsheet, not .pdf

This will tell you each country’s output and consumption. Country by country. Spend time on Europe

They still wrap their fish and chips in newspapers in GB ... the only saving grace for the paper.

This isnt Orwells style of propaganda, and we don’t (yet) live in Orwells world.

The BBC certainly was one of his models. It was a state broadcaster that was effectively a “sole source” of reporting in wartime Britain.

There is a problem with extending this Orwellian vision into our very different world of multiple sources of both facts and spin.

“pointing to strong government spending and investment related to the war”

Strong gdp growth is typical for countries at war. It is one of the traditionally mentioned cases where the gdp metric fails to reflect economic well being. This caveat is not new, or unique to me. It should have been mentioned in your macroeconomics classes. Nazi Germany for instance had tremendous GDP growth in WWII while economic misery was increasing.

They are not “multiple sources” if they just copy each other in broadcasting the talking points.
