Here's Why Hippos Are More Dangerous Than You Thought

The Hippopotamus, or "water horse," as the Greeks called it, is the third-largest land mammal in the world. They're kind of cute and kind of funny-looking, and they use that cuteness to hide just how murderous they can be. Seeing as the animal weighs between 3,000-9,000 pounds on average, according to Live Science, and can move about in the water better than most other land mammals (though they can't swim), it's easy to see why you should be absolutely terrified of this hungry-hungry animal.

I thought the title said ‘hippies’. Still would have been accurate.

I always steer clear of hippos. Seriously, though, here in the northwest we recently had an elephant roaming the streets (Butte, Montana) and zebras running loose east of Seattle.

“Don’t go where they live: mainly sub-Saharan Africa.”

I’d be happy to follow that advice even if hippos lived in France...

I always thought that pound for pound hippos are the most dangerous animal.

So then looking at both of your posts, the danger ranking would be Hippo > Moose >Bear?

Most people are surprised to learn that the closest living relative of the hippopotamus is the whale.

They are insanely protective of their territory and can literally chop a full grown crocodile in half with one giant bite.

In Africa, they are (or used to be) the number one most dangerous land animal for human beings.

Hippos forage on land at night time. If humans get between them and the water, hippos will often charge - and crush - them.

Farmers trying to protect their crops are at special risk.

There was a great scene in “Narcos Mexico” where Felix meets Pablo Escobar. Felix is very nervous because he has heard that Pablo sometimes feeds his enemies to his hippos.

Pablo responds that he would not have done that because his hippos hate Mexicans too.
