Inside tiny 900-person town torn apart by senseless killing of adorable blind and deaf Shih Tzu 'Teddy' - as owner files $1M lawsuit, mayor resigns and residents call for two-man police team to be shut down

A small Missouri town is enraged over the senseless killing of a small dog by a police officer that led the mayor to resign amid growing calls to shut down the police department.

Horrifying bodycam footage captured the moment Teddy, a five-year-old, 13-pound dog, was tragically gunned down by police officer Myron Woodson, in Sturgeon on May 19.

Kevin Abrahamson stepped down as mayor after Teddy's owner, Nicholas Hunter, filed a $1million lawsuit against the city and officer Woodson alleging that his Fourteenth Amendment rights were violated.

During a regularly scheduled city aldermen meeting on Tuesday, dozens of Sturgeon residents came out to show their support for Teddy, reported The Washington Post.

'This is your town, if you don't speak up now, you might not ever get anything to change,' said a woman holding a 'Justice for Teddy.'

who says it was a "senseless" killing?

You're right. Looking at small fragile police officer, this dog appears pretty damn vicious. Looking closer, the vicious beast is nearly as big as the shoe next to it in the picture.

Your tagline (not punishing bad behavior leads to even worse behavior) explains why people are concerned about this incident.

Shooting someone's dog, under the circumstances identified, does not seem like something a reasonable person would do.

Note to self:

“Shoot the shih-tzu — take her out of the equation,” is not always good advice.

The dog owner didn’t have control of his dog, he should be locked up.

Yeah, this guy is obviously preparing to rip someone's throat out.

More likely, the poor thing got between the cop and a donut. 🙄

Take all Officer Woodson’s weapons away from him, put him in a remote Alaskan cabin and let this happen to him PLEASE

You can leave a church or synagogue and you do not have to patronize a business. However, when it comes to government, you are dealing with an agency that has a monopoly on on the court system and law enforcement. It may be better to abolish city police departments entirely and place all law enforcement in the hands of elected sheriffs who are not under control of the mayor or the county commissioners. You have to note that in the more liberal states, sheriffs are under greater restrictions and are more likely to be subject to the county and state governments.

If a town can't afford or manage better cops than MORON woodson then they are better off with no cops at all.

What a shame and a disgrace.

“The dog owner didn’t have control of his dog, he should be locked up.”

I’m with you on this. Most people these days haven’t come face to face with a rabid dog when you were a small child hiding alone in a road ditch, holding your breath and praying that rabid dogs run in a straight lines, as I had been told. Our farm dog had to be shot because he was bitten and locked up for 21 days when he proved rabid. I am still not fond of dogs. They are not always friendly.

The owner ought to be on trial for animal neglect. He let a deaf and blind dog run around outdoors unaccompanied. What if it had run out on the road and been hit by a car? The entire issue is that the dog appeared to be a rabid stray, one of which symptoms is a loss of motor coordination, i.e. running around in circles. For the owner to show up after the fact looking to cash in on a lawsuit after not caring enough about his dog to have him on a leash - that’s the living definition of chutzpah.

You have to note that in the more liberal states, sheriffs are under greater restrictions and are more likely to be subject to the county and state governments.

In fact, most sheriffs and cops are indirectly under the control and threat of DOJ, thanks to Obama/Holder and their BLM / "defund police" movement.

has nothing to do with you.

Of course, you’re right because “it’s just a dog”, and “not your dog.”

Every rural and suburban street has a Fluffy, usually hanging out with children. The dog acts as a barrier between idiots and nature and the neighborhood children.

Sorry that you don’t have a good dog.

Geez, get a grip of yourself.
The dog was blind, deaf and tiny. He wasn’t a mass murderer, going around town killing people.
That idiot cop needs to grow some balls. He should be embarrassed of himself.

From the story, the dog was unaccompanied and appeared to be rabid - it was walking around in circles. The owner showed up after the fact. Who leaves a deaf and blind dog free to run around outdoors unleashed? Never mind getting hit by a car - it can’t even detect, let get away from aggressive dogs and other predators.
