A Farewell to Kings

When they turn the pages of history When these days have passed long ago Will they read of us with sadness For the seeds that we let grow?

We turned our gaze From the castles in the distance Eyes cast down On the path of least resistance

Cities full of hatred Fear and lies Withered hearts And cruel, tormented eyes Scheming demons Dressed in kingly guise Beating down the multitude And scoffing at the wise

The hypocrites are slandering The sacred halls of truth Ancient nobles showering Their bitterness on youth Can't we find The minds that made us strong? Oh, can't we learn To feel what's right and what's wrong? What's wrong

Cities full of hatred Fear and lies Withered hearts And cruel, tormented eyes Scheming demons Dressed in kingly guise Beating down the multitude And scoffing at the wise

Whoa, can't we raise our eyes And make a start? Can't we find the minds To lead us closer to the heart?

Well that didn’t format…

When they turn the pages of history
When these days have passed long ago
Will they read of us with sadness
For the seeds that we let grow?

We turned our gaze
From the castles in the distance
Eyes cast down
On the path of least resistance

Cities full of hatred Fear and lies
Withered hearts And cruel, tormented eyes
Scheming demons Dressed in kingly guise
Beating down the multitude And scoffing at the wise

The hypocrites are slandering
The sacred halls of truth
Ancient nobles showering Their bitterness on youth
Can’t we find The minds that made us strong?
Oh, can’t we learn To feel what’s right and what’s wrong?
What’s wrong

Cities full of hatred Fear and lies
Withered hearts And cruel, tormented eyes
Scheming demons Dressed in kingly guise
Beating down the multitude
And scoffing at the wise

Whoa, can’t we raise our eyes And make a start?
Can’t we find the minds To lead us closer to the heart?

My favorite Rush album. They turned the progressive corner with it. Geddy’s bass tone was unmatchable. The lyrics are quite applicable to today.

Why I posted this.

Sometimes I wonder if Lakeside Park is full of homeless drug addicts.

It’s too bad Geddy has turned out to be a flaming progressive dupe. Read his autobiography and it’s quite clear that he has bought into the progressive BS.

Much of Rush’s lyrics back then are still relevant today. It’s like the band kept warning us about a dystopian future.

Examples:

The push to outlaw gasoline-powered cars? Red Barchetta.
Where a socialist utopia leads? 2112.
Where so-called “social justice” leads? The Trees.

Good tune but Cygnus X1 is better.

Yea, Rush was my favorite band growing up. Stopped listening to the newer stuff after roll the bones album. Good thing because I swore to myself never to support any person, company etc that doesn’t align with my ideals.
Pretty slim pickings as far as entertainment goes but I don’t need that to be happy. Many of Rush songs tell the story of a dystopian future where we are controlled subjects. Very similar road we’re travelling today.

And Neil also read history books and applied them to times like these. (Of course, if he were alive, he would be thinking that it was Trump that had just met his Bastille day).

“There’s no bread, let them eat cake
There’s no end to what they’ll take”

Neal Peart wrote some amazing lyrics, so deep in their meanings of everyday life. I have friends who worked and toured with them back in the day, both before and after the unfortunate tragedies in Neal’s family life. They all have said about him that he read so much, and about so many things, that he could carry on deep conversation on just about anything. He was also, by far, the most conservative person in the group. Also a bit of a recluse, both on tour and in his personal life. His home was literally hidden in the middle of nowhere in Quebec.

Huge Rush fan since 1979. Neil Peart was truly a mensch. Reading his motorcycling adventures (55,000 miles in 14 months) reveals so much about him. He was a master drummer nad his lyrics are timeless. The music world misses him. I miss him. Some of his insights - the first one is my favorite as I 100% agree with it:

When I’m riding my motorcycle, I’m glad to be alive. When I stop riding my motorcycle, I’m glad to be alive.

We’re only immortal for a limited time.

Everything in moderation, with occasional excess

I have come to believe that anger and grudges are burning embers in the heart.

Adventures suck when you’re having them.

Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep.

Half the world cries Half the world laughs Half the world tries To be the other half

The Rush documentary “Beyond the Lighted Stage” is a must see for any Rush fan and really for non Rush fans. After watching that movie almost anyone with a brain would be cheering them on whether they liked the music or not. They went their own way despite the record companies wanting 4 minute singles, they kept sending them side long songs and concept albums and then the fans took over and the record companies learned their lesson. Rush fans are probably the most fervent in the world, with the one exception of Taylor Swift.

I believe your friends. Neal was truly talented with words and music. In the early days, people would talk about his intelligence, and the story I heard was that Neal was a schoolteacher who taught mythology. I don’t know how that rumor started. I now see it wasn’t true. He was simply well-read and self-taught. It’s sad that he had so much heartbreak in his life.

The funniest thing is that people called Rush a “Fascist Band”, because of Neal’s references to Ayn Rand.

Without even realizing that Geddy’s parents were Holocaust survivors.

Neal became more “socialist” over time.
