Researchers are investigating the effects ellagic acid, an antioxidant found in some fruits and vegetables, could have on halting and potentially reversing the damage caused by fatty liver disease.
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the physiological manifestation of obesity in the liver. The prevalence of NAFLD has increased from 25.24% in 2015 to 29.38% in 2021, and this condition now accounts for 45.8% of all cases of chronic-liver-disease-related deaths worldwide.
There currently exists no treatment for the long-term management of NAFLD; however, dietary interventions have been investigated for the treatment of this disease, including several polyphenolic compounds such as ellagic acid.
Mrs. Tharani Senavirathna noted that ellagic acid, which is found in a variety of food such as raspberries, pomegranate, blackberries, and pecan nuts, is widely recognized for its antioxidant properties, but also exhibits anti-inflammatory, antifibrotic and anticancer properties.
"Ellagic acid stands out as a remarkable polyphenolic compound, possessing a wide range of pharmacological properties that hold promise in treating various chronic diseases, including NAFLD.
"Due to its multifaceted biological effects, edible plants containing ellagic acid, and its derivatives are recognized as valuable functional foods for enhancing human health. Moreover, there is evidence suggesting that ellagic acid, when combined with other antioxidant nutraceuticals, exhibits a synergistic therapeutic effect, making it a potential candidate for combination therapy."

Also, look into prior Pantethine studies I’ve posted. A Japanese study reversed all signs of fatty liver in over half of human participants.
Nice to know...
“There currently exists no treatment for the long-term management of NAFLD”
Sure there is.
Lose the (say) 65 pounds of fat through caloric restriction. Exercise. The liver is one of the few human organs that can actually regenerate, and repair itself, at least up to a certain point. Weight loss shows dramatic improvement in fatty liver disease.
PING Fatty Liver
Yep. Fatty liver — like Type 2 diabetes — is almost always fixable with a change in diet.
Pomegranates are hard to eat, but pomegranate juice is fine. William Li , MD mentions it in his terrific book, Eat to Beat Disease.
Book is an easy read with terrific information. I learned that we all have cancer cells in our bodies and certain foods kill them, especially purple potatoes, green tea and walnuts. I now consume those every day. Purple potatoes are hard to find, as they should be organic. Luckily I have a NaturalGrocer in the neighborhood and they almost always have them. Safeway has them too but not organic.
Li recommends steaming veggies to preserve nutrients. I’ve always done that, easiest way to cook too.
Have you tried ‘fingerling’ potatoes? Purple, red, and white. Most grocery stores carry them now - usually as a medley of potatoes but they’re wonderful. Thanks for the information Veto
I’ve become so jaded that the first thought I have about this study (and others like it) is that it was paid for by the pomegranate lobby.
I didn’t use to be this way, but I find it harder to trust anyone and anything lately especially when it comes to, “science” after all the damage done by Dr. “I am the Science” evil little dwarf.
You get the $cience you pay for.
That’s what my Safeway has. But they are not organic. Environmental Working Group yarded fruits and veggies for pesticides. Potatoes have pesticides, therefore I only eat organic.
That is certainly possible, but natural foods generally don’t make the fraudsters rich as quickly as quack medicines. So it’s less probable because fraudsters generally focus on the more lucrative lies.
