It came as a big surprise to me that a fighter jet has to stop for gas enroute from TX to CA.

I looked it up and it's about 1400 miles and I think the F-35 should be able to go that far without refueling. However, being just a casual transfer, the pilot may have wanted to stop in Albuquerque for other reasons.

I think the F35 advertises a 1200 mile range, without an external tank or in-flight refueling. If the transfer was 1400 miles, the typical pilot would find a refuel stop halfway between, leaving lots of reserve fuel for problems on either leg.

It wasn’t there for long. I live on the east side of the Manzano Mountains, and the flight path to the airport is pretty much over my house. Yesterday at about 12:30 I heard a jet (non commercial) and it was this plane fairly low and not at speed going overhead. Kirtland doesn’t host many fighter craft since the Air Guard there was closed down, and they flew F-16’s.
