Lexi Thompson’s history with the U.S. Women’s Open began as a prodigious 12-year-old when she became the youngest to ever compete in the championship in 2007. Though she’s never won this event, it seems fitting that she makes a big life announcement at this event.

In the lead-up to the 79th U.S. Women’s Open at Lancaster Country Club, Thompson announced her retirement on the USGA’s website. The 29-year-old plans to play out the rest of the 2024 season.

Thompson, who has battled a hand injury for some time, has won 11 times on the LPGA, including the 2014 Chevron Championship, her only major. She won her first LPGA title at age 16

...

Over the course of her 13 seasons on tour, Thompson’s heartache has been on full display on several occasions, most notably the 2017 ANA Inspiration when she was informed of a four-stroke penalty while the back nine Sunday for improperly replacing her ball earlier in the week and then signing an incorrect scorecard. Thompson, who was leading the tournament at the time, eventually lost in a playoff to So Yeon Ryu, but the crowd at Mission Hills Country Club was quite loudly on her side.

Very entertaining style. Win some, lose some, always winsome.

She’s probably making the right decision and at the right time.
This 29 y\o lady has spent over half her life publicly competing in a sport at a high level. She very likely missed out on enjoying life off the golf course. She can step away now, with her head and her favorite golf club held high.

Always a classy player who makes time for the fans, particularly the young ones, and remembers to thank tournament hosts, sponsors, staff, volunteers, and patrons, no matter how she finishes.

Too much pressure, too fast, much like Michelle Wie. Twelve is too young to play in a major tournament, and 15 is too young to turn pro. No normal growing up and learning how to win when the going gets rough.

Was/is a bit of a loner who has had mental health struggles, despite her amazing talent and work ethic. Losing the 2017 ANA Inspiration major championship after some d-bag fan called in a four stroke penalty cost her the win and really sent her into a tailspin. Still, 11 LPGA victories and one major is nothing at which to sneeze.

Thompson says she is retiring from full time golf. Hopefully she’ll play the occasional tournament, perhaps one of the majors.

In one stretch over 2021 and 2022 Lexi made 27 consecutive cuts. This year she has made 3 of 7 cuts. She is in decline and does not want to spend the rest of her career fighting to make cuts. Creamer, Pressel, and Wie all retired shortly after turning 30. Female careers are short.

She looks a hell of a lot older then 29. Is that an error?

Lexi has always been one of my favorite female golfers. Of course I never met her except on my big screen TV but I have a sense she is intelligent, obviously beautiful, charming, witty, passionate, skilled, driven and genuine. Quite an intriguing woman.
