Given the indecent haste of his departure, one wonders, doesn’t one...

He’ll probably get invited to the White House where Biden will say, “I can relate to this guy.”

Biden continued.. “..when I was a young man, growing up in Cuba, I used to umpire in a semi-pro league… no joke!.. the MLB wanted to give me a scholarship but I chose public service instead…”

MLB statement: “Angel Hernandez has been replaced by an actual blind person who we believe will be a far more accurate umpire.”

Stevie Wonder could make better calls than him.

hernandez must know he is incompetent By the time you reach triple A you pretty much know the strike zone and how you call it and are consistent. . So he didn’t have the balls or ethics to resign even when he had to know he was throwing out twice as many as the next umpire. Some of the guys he tossed were never kicked out of a game by anyone else.

But the fault is the league’s if Hernandez didn’t resogn the league should have tossed him years ago.

On a related note, I had the opportunity to tour Truist Park (home of the Atlanta Braves) last year. One of the best parts was when the guide took us by the umpire’s lounge. The room label was in both regular script and Braille.

when I umpired in Quincy in the midwest league there was a wooden structure under the bleachers barely big enough for two umpires and a shower. Before the game Abe Lincoln came in and gave us a penny each to be honest. The guy was a dead ringer and went around Illinois appearing as honest abe.

Allen and his crew are infamously awful, not just for that one example in the Detroit game, but others.

So bad, in fact, that they were excluded from officiating the 2023 Playoffs.

“Allen and his crew are infamously awful”

The original thread did not cover the crew, it covered the displayed play. And by going after an official that had nothing to do with the play is what I posted. If you wish to complain about the linesman and his error, go for it. But you aren’t when you mention the referee slot making a call he didn’t.

The problem with the post to me is that a comment being made about the decision not to use certain officials for a contest can’t be a problem with he NFL as the rating process for officials to stay in the league is extensive.

Every play in the NFL for officials is evaluated. Each game averages about 153 plays, so a typical official who works 14 regular-season games is evaluated on nearly 2,200 plays in a single season. There is nowhere to hide on the football field. Whether working a closely contested Super Bowl or the final minutes of a preseason game, officials are expected to exhibit the same high level of excellence on every play. A subpar season-long performance could mean remediation, or even a demotion. NFL officials serve on a year-to-year contract, and they have to prove their mettle every year. There is no guarantee that they will return the next season.

So if they are not good enough to be there, then why did the NFL sign them and let them continue to call when they are constantly evaluated with film, required supervisor game attendance, weekly total game ratings, and with others waiting to get in, the pressure of staying within the guidelines estblished by the league with the threat of being discharged at any moment available? If the league accepts their work and continues to allow its continuence, that is what the game is. And since the league establishes the guidelines, determines the rating of the officials, and makes all the rules, plus it is within their power to discharge and replace, then why haven’t they?

The league provides a product. If you don’t appreciate their product, then turn on another football league. What you see is acceptable by the league to give to you to buy their jersies. And the dollar is what it is all about, not the game. Penalties could be called on every play in the NFL. But half the fans don’t want to see that. And the other half are often happy their team got away with it.

My point exactly. Took you long enough.

“Took you long enough.”

I guess I still don’t understand what you want. Not using them for playoff games is a far cry from firing them. And the can easily do that for performance. There is a line as long as the one to get into our southern border of officials that would give their first born to get into the league and make the bucks with the perks these guys get. Yet the person that was misrepresented as the person that made the call displayed is still under contract making the bucks which you seem to want fired.

If he’s that bad, and the line of officials is that long, and it is, then why is he still there? He apparently is doing what the league wants. So that’s their product. Either enjoy it or change channels to another league. But complaining about something that isn’t being changed accomplishes nothing.

The NFL for years had made decisions “in the fans best interests” as long as it fits their lifestyle. And the owners are the ones that make those decisions. They make the big bucks from their product and you, the fan, pays it. And as long as the outlook is consistent, they will move their chess pieces around on their board. And if they’re happy, that’s where the buck stops.

And hopefully some others to follow. Calls behind the plate often enrage both dugouts these days.

Overhead videos frequently show pitches well off the plate. I can understand missing up or down, and even pitches that are close to clipping the edge of the plate. But not ones clearly outside the plate, especially when a third strike is called.

“And yet, by law, we can’t remove the worst president in history, and he won’t retire (or his bosses won’t let him retire).”

************

As a nation we don’t much insist on performance standards or accountability. Those concepts seem to make people uncomfortable.

When you tolerate incompetence you’ll only get more of it.
