An ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin fell for a joke on live TV that circulated in the wake of the death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.

Not long after the reports emerged, a reporter for a French TV station mistakenly reported as a rumor a joke on Telegram and X, formerly Twitter, that Raisi's helicopter had been piloted by a Mossad agent named "Eli Kopter."
State TV host Vladimir Solovyov, one of the most-prominent figures in Kremlin-backed media, appeared to fall for the joke during a live broadcast on channel Russia-1. The Daily Beast's Julia Davis shared an excerpt of the footage on Tuesday on X. Newsweek has contacted Russia's Foreign Ministry for comment by email.
"Meanwhile in Russia: in his zeal to blame the U.S. and Israel for the Iranian president's helicopter crash, state TV host Vladimir Solovyov totally fell for a joke blaming Mossad agent 'Eli Copter,'" Davis said in a caption accompanying the video.
"We talked about yesterday's tragedy. Today, suddenly, a French TV channel produced the following," Solovyov said, and then showed a clip of the broadcast of the joke.
"It is a political analyst, Daniel Haik, on the French channel 24 News," added Solovyov.

It it easy to understand how non-English speaker could fall for this joke, especially a Russian speaker.
Helicopter in Russian is вертолете which sounds nothing like helicopter.
A play on words in a foreign language will easily escape a non-native speaker of that language.

Some of these guys just need to develop a sense of humor.
Reporters should never be in a rush to publish.
Always get independent verification of reports before publishing unless you have a dependable eye witness.

Never heard of the guy (Hinkle), but just saw that he describes himself as an “American Conservative Marxist–Leninist.” Lol. Quite a confused chap.
If you actually watch the clip, it is far from clear that Solovyov fell for anything. The man is Jewish himself and lived in the USA & speaks English, so it seems (to me) unlikely that he was fooled by this. Newsweak, what can you say.
