LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler was arrested by Louisville Metro Police on Friday morning after trying to drive into the entrance of Valhalla Golf Club, the site of this week's PGA Championship.
Traffic outside the golf course had been stopped after a man was struck and killed by a shuttle bus around 5 a.m. ET.
Scheffler faces charges of second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic. Scheffler was released at 8:40 a.m. ET and headed to Valhalla. The assault charge is a felony; the others are misdemeanors.
Scheffler's attorney said it would be up to Scheffler whether he plays today in the second round.
According to ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington, who witnessed the incident, Scheffler was trying to drive around the crash scene on a median. A police officer instructed Scheffler to stop, but Scheffler continued to drive about 10 to 20 yards toward the entrance.
At one point, an officer attached himself to the side of Scheffler's car. Scheffler stopped his car as he turned into the entrance of Valhalla Golf Club.
After about 20 to 30 seconds, Scheffler rolled down his window to talk to the officer. The officer grabbed Scheffler's arm to pull him out of the vehicle, according to Darlington. The officer reached inside the vehicle to open the door, and once Scheffler was pulled out, he was pushed against the car and placed in handcuffs.
Darlington was standing at the entrance when Scheffler was detained. Darlington said Scheffler turned to him and asked, "Can you help?"
According to Darlington, an officer instructed him to back away.
Well, there’s gonna more to this story.....that’s for sure.
I’m guessing a giant misunderstanding and overzealous cops
“Don’t you know who I am?”
No. An entitled jerk who thought he was more important then stopping at a traffic death investigation.
“overzealous cops”
I find that very hard to believe
Cops always behave in a restrained and under control manner
That’s what I’m seeing. Not excusing Scottie, but the officer over reacted from what I see. But I certainly may not know the entire situation.
Self entitled ken. Yes he was registered to play, no that doesnt give him m carte blanche the run over people to get into the course.
“a traffic death investigation”
How in the world would he have known that?🤷
It wasn’t even light out yet and it’s raining like crazy up there even now.
“I certainly may not know the entire situation”
Few do right now but there’s already several on this thread that are convinced THEY do. 😂
Per the above, Scheffler was trying to get around the area by driving over a median. I can see why that would have alarmed a cop because the LEO would have no way if knowing for sure what the driver intended.
Pity Scheffler didn’t identify himself to LE, explain the situation, and politely inquire if there was a way to get past the backup.
I did a search on his name an got bupkus 🤷
Officer on the scene was questioned by a reporter and quoted: "Right now, he’s going to jail. He’s going to jail and there ain’t nothing you can do about it."
My money is on "failed high school hero jock" Ossifer Bubba being a big man.
Probably 100% correct. Players were told to drive around and the cop apparently didn't get the memo, Scottie had no clue what the cop was doing.
How far did he drag the cop?
No. A golfer with a placard who had been instructed that they could bypass the closure. The cop is a thug who shouldn’t be wearing a uniform, much less have access to a weapon.
Cop wasn’t smart enough to realize what was going on and over reacted. If he did this to an illegal alien on the border Biden would have fired him on the spot.
I hope the golfer files a false arrest lawsuit against the the police officer. This is a good way to make sure pro golfers NEVER play in Louisville again.
Scheffler doesn’t have to have a clue.
You do what you’re told, make polite inquiries if you’d like to do something else.
You do NOT drive over a median.
The cop would have no way to know what the heck your intentions are.
I wonder if the cop(s) may have been of a certain ethnicity. That’s what it looked like when they were escorting him to the police car.
