LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler was detained by Louisville Metro Police on Friday morning while trying to drive into the entrance of Valhalla Golf Club, the site of this week's PGA Championship.
Traffic outside the golf course had been stopped after a man was struck and killed by a shuttle bus around 5 a.m. ET.
According to ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington, who witnessed the incident, Scheffler was trying to drive around the crash scene on a median. A police officer instructed Scheffler to stop, but Scheffler continued to drive about 10 to 20 yards toward the entrance.
At one point, an officer attached himself to the side of Scheffler's car. Scheffler stopped his car as he turned into the entrance of Valhalla Golf Club.
After about 20 to 30 seconds, Scheffler rolled down his window to talk to the officer. The officer grabbed Scheffler's arm to pull him out of the vehicle, according to Darlington. The officer reached inside the vehicle to open the door, and once Scheffler was pulled out, he was pushed against the car and placed in handcuffs.
Darlington was standing at the entrance when Scheffler was detained. Darlington said Scheffler turned to him and asked, "Can you help?"
According to Darlington, an officer instructed him to back away.
"You need to get out of the way," the officer told Darlington. "Right now, he's going to jail, and there's nothing you can do about it."

His mistake was stopping.
Now has a local attorney who said Scottie was told to drive around and the cop wasn’t aware that players were being allowed to pass unencumbered due to credentials and car window placards.
Whenever I think you can't top yourself for absolute nuttery, you prove me wrong.
DUH! ping, in case you missed it.
ESPN is reporting that golfers were told they could get into the club and bypass the closure. Thug cop overreacted.
So if a cop back before that point somewhere told him that. That probably didn’t include instructions to ignore any cops up ahead. Cop directing traffic tells you to stop, you got stop. And you really got to stop if they are pounding on your window…not roll another 20 yards.
One of them wrote: "Absolutely stupid. He’s lucky the cops didn’t kill him. They’d have every right to for not stopping."
Dang...they even dressed him.
Cop over reacted, illegal aliens get better treatment illegally rushing the border.
Oh suddenly ESPN is trusted news. Lol
Even then, it doesn’t mean they are free to ignore any cop along the way. He needed to stop for a second when told to do so. Maybe his placard wasn’t visible enough, maybe it fell down as he bounced through the median, maybe cop in rain and dark couldn’t see it… so stop for a few seconds, clear it up and move on.
Or just do as you were instructed to do and drive through the diversion to get to the course and ignore the thug cop on a power trip.
Exactly.
We have a few cranks on this thread doing the usual FR thing of going nutter on a reading of the headline.
They're going to ride this little hobbyhorse into the ground.
And Scottie wins enough money from the lawsuit to change the city name to Scottieville.
You never just stop your car, you drive it to a safe spot to prevent the officer and yourself from being hit by another vehicle.
Scheffler stopped his car as he turned into the entrance of Valhalla Golf Club.
Sounds exactly what he was doing but the officer got over zealous.....
Every one of those charges are trumped up in order to justify the excessive force used by the officer.
You see videos of this crap happening all the time on YouTube...
Cops seemingly don’t even know how to conduct traffic stops, check points etc anymore. I had to explain to them how it’s supposed to be done on a number of occasions on my little island. It sucks when the “boys in blue” make the “defund the police” crowd’s point for em. And honestly, I don’t think it follows that while every other “ enforcement agency’” has forgotten whom they serve, and has turned on its citizenry, that police departments everywhere wouldn’t have the same issues and followed suit in large numbers . It certainly seems that way around here, and I live in a bright red “city” in a bright red state. We are pretty hardcore conservative around here and we are all furious with our police department on a daily basis.
Yep, PGA really to blame, they should have had escorts down at the entrance, they actually made golfers walk miles to the course. PGA should have hired the lawyer for Scottie, this was a PGA screw up.
And it didn’t take long for the bootlickers to show up, either.
This is a stain on the PGA and LPD. I think this likely to get pushed under the rug..
