LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler was detained by Louisville Metro Police on Friday morning while trying to drive into the entrance of Valhalla Golf Club, the site of this week's PGA Championship.
Traffic outside the golf course had been stopped after a man was struck and killed by a shuttle bus around 5 a.m. ET.
According to ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington, who witnessed the incident, Scheffler was trying to drive around the crash scene on a median. A police officer instructed Scheffler to stop, but Scheffler continued to drive about 10 to 20 yards toward the entrance.
At one point, an officer attached himself to the side of Scheffler's car. Scheffler stopped his car as he turned into the entrance of Valhalla Golf Club.
After about 20 to 30 seconds, Scheffler rolled down his window to talk to the officer. The officer grabbed Scheffler's arm to pull him out of the vehicle, according to Darlington. The officer reached inside the vehicle to open the door, and once Scheffler was pulled out, he was pushed against the car and placed in handcuffs.
Darlington was standing at the entrance when Scheffler was detained. Darlington said Scheffler turned to him and asked, "Can you help?"
According to Darlington, an officer instructed him to back away.
"You need to get out of the way," the officer told Darlington. "Right now, he's going to jail, and there's nothing you can do about it."

Entitled golfer needs to have the book thrown at him.
Needs to be disciplined by the PGA as well.
Raised by a stay at home dad, mom was breadwinner COO at a law firm. I’m guessing a healthy dose of beta dad and biscuit lawyer mom taught him he doesn’t have to follow the rules. Maybe the cops were raised differently.
No kidding. This seems preventable by the driver merely interacting politely.
The police officer has bets that say Scheffler will lose ,LOL
Agreed. Sounds like yet another thug cop on a power trip. But I’m sure all the “good cops” were there to keep him in check.
....and a golf tournament to play.
Memorable week for Scottie.
A police officer instructed Scheffler to stop, but Scheffler continued to drive about 10 to 20 yards toward the entrance.
Absolutely stupid. He’s lucky the cops didn’t kill him. They’d have every right to for not stopping.
Bullcrap. That works happen to anyone driving through a death scene perimeter and ignoring a cop pounding on his window for 20 yards then taking his sweet time to roll the window down.
And if it was some black dude or working class dog people would be cheering his getting cuffed.
He found out.
BS. He didn’t stop when directed to.
He’s lucky he wasn’t shot and killed. Many have due to not stopping by police when directed.
Reported others were driving around the incident before Scottie did. He just got caught!?
So stop and roll down your window. Placard doesn’t mean You get to ignore the traffic cop. Placard is for normal ops that morning. For whatever reason cop wanted him to stop. He didn’t. Placard isn’ta cop override.
Guess he’s too important to stop and ask politely what the plan is.
His R2 tee time is 10:08 (EDT) - it will be interesting to see what happens when he misses his start.
Scottie had a pass to get into the club. Thug cop ignored it and went on a power trip.
Don't get involved with our fake government and their gunthugs.
He did. He was told earlier he would be allowed to go around.
Players were told they would be allowed to circumvent the stops - just heard this on espn+. Cop needed to cool down.
Bullshit. He’s a guy with a placard trying to get to work. A thug cop overreacted. They tend to do that. And after Scottie won the Masters, everyone on here was praising him as an example of christian humility.
A pass into the club didn’ doesn’t give him the right to ignore a cop directing traffic. And it’s dark and cop is out in the rain. And you got a pic of how the thug golfer had the placard displayed? For all I know it was in the seat beside him. But I guess it’s too much to ask Mr big guy to stop for 5 seconds and let the cop see it.
Cop was right here.
