Heaven forbid if people actually cook meals at home.
One or two excellent local eateries have closed near us. Darn shame. And we are in business friendly Florida. I cannot imagine trying to make it in a Demon Rat state.
Stopped by McD’s on the way to an appointment yesterday because I’d overslept and no time to prepare breakfast. I used to love their bagel breakfast sandwiches and was happy to see they’re back.
Ordered a bacon egg and cheese bagel. Nothing else. No hash browns, no OJ, no coffee (don’t drink it anyway).
Almost $7.00 for one breakfast sandwich. Thanks Joe, you f’ing bastard.
It’s always a restaurant apocalypse. It’s the worst business in the world to get into. Margins are tiny, whether or not you catch on is largely random. whether you stay popular is just as random. 80% of all new restaurants close in the first year, and even after surviving that you generally have a 25% chance of closing every year.
I look at eating out, going to restaurants as being a rip off for years now. It’s just gotten significantly worse in the last couple years.
Just last night I had an outing with some friends. We stopped at the only restaurant open past 8 (yeah, it’s a small town) I hadn’t been there for a while. A burrito was $29 and they raised their pints to $8 !!! I know the owner and he said he has to because his expenses are so high now and he isn’t making any more money. a $50 a head dinner use to be pretty fancy. Now, it’s a burrito and a beer. Let’s go Biden.
But, but, but.... that would take WORK.
And then there'd be dishes to wash, too!
Inflation is nasty. It makes pricing your service difficult.

My wife and I wanted pizza last night. The local mom/pop place is God awful and stays in business only through their alcohol sales so we opted for Pizza Hut carry out. $12 plus tax for a large meat lovers pizza with onions added. We picked this up at their drive through and there was a suggestion for three different tip amounts—for drive through. So not happening.
Our local outdoor concert venue sells stuff, they have the cooler immediately behind them so they turn and pull out the 24oz beer in 1 second at around $12/per, no cash so credit card with a place for a 5, 15, and 20% tip....so very much not happening.
We have a Marco’s pizza nearby. Sunday is pizza night for our extended family, up to 18 or 20 of us. We use the app and coupons to get great deals plus $10 off every $100 spent. We’re on our 7th $10 off. Marco’s has a wide variety of crust thickness, crusts, and specials. You can customize a special and even do half-and-half. Some of us like the “pizza bowl” which has no crust. Feeding all of us is $38-$48. Great value.
It’s becoming much harder to find a sit down Chinese place
“Almost $7.00 for one breakfast sandwich.”
Five minutes ago I ordered two egg McMuffins on the app. The total for the TWO was $5.79.
“Buy one Breakfast Sandwich, get one for $2 Valid 2x/week. Available only on Mobile Order and Pay.”
and how many are now frequenting their local establishments again???
I think all so called fast food companies are in trouble.
This is because there are much better options that were not around when places like McDs were at their height.
The other issue is that most people have realized the food at these type of restaurants is just not good for you. There are better options for about the same amount of money.
There is a place right down the street from my office that actually took over what was a drive through McDonalds. It is called Pressed Cafe. The quality of their food is great. They have a huge menu of sandwiches, smoothies, burritos, wraps and other more healthy choices. They are doing great.
Right across the street is Chick Fillet. Ever since they opened a few years ago they have been mobbed. At lunch there is a line two cars wide wrapped around the building. Yet, the line moves incredibly fast. That is because their restaurants are better managed and their food is better quality.
There is a Burger King down the street that will also be going out of business soon. Whenever I pass it, there are almost no cars in the drive through. That is a huge change from the 1980s and 90s when it would always be busy.
The only fast food place that still seems to do well around here is Wendy’s. I sometimes pick up dinner for my wife and I on the way home. Apple pecan Salad, Taco Salad, large Chocolate Frosty(now $20.20). It was 17.80 not too long ago.
Everyone who works there is probably an illegal based on their Spanish/English accent at the drive through.
