It could be named, “ATB” or around the block. It would be used at golf clubs, or at small gated communities. It’s not much more than a golf cart with a roof.

But, EVs, no matter what the size, are yesterday’s new wonder vehicles. The ‘gotta get one’ days are gone, and most never got one, and never will. BYD is really ‘IYD’ or in your dreams’. Hyperbole such as that in the article above, is not going to sell anyone on the crap.

>> BYD, which stands for “Build Your Dreams,” could be a nightmare for the U.S. auto industry

BYD, which appears to stand for “Behold Your Death”, could be a nightmare to drive on high-speed American highways.

On one hand, I want absolutely nothing to do with Chinese cars or EV’s. On the other hand, the article raised some interesting points.

American auto manufacturers are always stuck in the past. They mentioned hose thickness because they’ve always done it that way.

In the 70’s, the Big 3 lost business to Japan, Datsun, Honda, Toyota etc. They were forced to get better, which they did for many years. Unfortunately, they haven’t kept up.

Did you notice that the car is a sedan/hatchback? How many sedans and hatchback does Ford and GM make? I think the answer will be zero by next year.

As far as buying a new car, I would ever even consider it. But, if someone, an American company preferably would make a simple, basic ICE car without all the luxuries, at a really fair market price, I’d really consider it. Sure, I like power windows and a great sound system. I can care less about multiple or even any air bags and a hotshot emissions system. Strip it down to the basics and let the market decide.

Will it come with instructions? Have they learned HOW to write instructions/directions in the past 50-70 years for assembling anything MADE IN CHINA? If not, I think they should start there first!

"While the acceleration isn’t head-snapping like other EVs, the Seagull is peppy and would have no problems entering a freeway in heavy traffic. Woychowski says its top speed is limited to 81 mph."

It might find a market in senile boomers under the Marx brand label and may even help rejuvenate Toys-R-Us.

BYD and quality can not be used in the same reference. There are thousands and thousands of this junk sitting in lots all over China which are not sold and cannot be sold.

Brilliant idea #89. Export the junk to the US.

“Woychowski says its top speed is limited to 81 mph.”

The speed limit on my local interstate is 80 mph.

It’s easy to cruise @ 84 mph with no risk of being stopped.

This EV comes off as little more than a well-appointed glorified golf cart under real world conditions, due to range limitations. The concern expressed by auto execs is likely to do with what they fear might be coming down the pike rather than what’s currently being sold. And this make, BYD, is best of breed, a company on which Warren Buffett chose to wager a few bucks.

https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/byd-stock-sales-warren-buffett-berkshire-hathaway-china-ev-munger-2023-11

Note that Munger sold while pumping Chinese stocks - a classic case of talking your book. Given that the Berkshire philosophy is to hold forever - and it still holds Apple shares it acquired a while back - that’s not a vote of confidence for Chinese EV companies. And BYD is the leader of the pack.

[The table below shows some estimated real-world examples in perfect condition and in conditions needing A/C to heat or cool vehicles. See our range guide to see how the range is affected in real world.

Range Consumption
90kmh/56mph perfect condition 247km / 153 mi 15 kWh/100km / 4,1 mi/kWh
90kmh/56mph with 2KW heating 222km /134mi 17,2 kWh/100km /3,6 mi/kWh
70mph/112kmh perfect condition 206 km / 128 mi 18 kWh/100km / 3,5 mi/kWh
70mph/112kmh with 2KW heating 187km / 116mi 19,8 kWh/100km / 3,1 mi/kWh
120kmh/75mph perfect condition 195 km / 121 mi 19 kWh/100km / 3,3 mi/kWh]
120kmh/75mph with 2KW heating 179 km /111mi 20,7 kWh/100km /3,0 mi/kWh]

If it’s made in China it will dissolve like a alka- seltzer tablet in a rainstorm after a few years. China, the land where appearance is everything and substance is an afterthought.

EV is so failed. I wish there was a way to short it. It will be DOA in a decade unless invention intervenes.

I was in Cancun a couple of weeks back and there are TONS of Chinese cars there. I'm a lifelong car nut and knew something was up when I started seeing new MGs on the roads, and cars with logos and even NAMES that I couldn't recognize. Like this one:
