An uncommonly powerful solar storm may occur in outer space Friday, officials have warned - the first in nearly 20 years if it comes to fruition.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued the Severe (G4) Geomagnetic Storm Watch late Thursday - which itself was the first such alert aired since January 2005, when the earth was hit with the highest dose of radiation it had seen in a half-century.

This time around, the 'unusual event' could disrupt electronic devices like GPS and parts of power grids, the American agency said - while citing how it may also drape a huge portion of the country in a spectacular circle of light.

A coronal mass ejection caused the Carrington Event back in 1859.

Lord Carrington was Queen Victoria’s science advisor.

A repeat of that event would be a catastrophic event for most of the world.

Fortunately, what is predicted sounds mild compared to that 1859 event.

I was stationed in the Azores 1978-1980 where we had HF Radio Voice-frequency carrier telegraph VFCT tone packs.   We had to listen to the NOAA warnings delivered on Coordinated Universal Time hacks on station WWV Fort Collins, Colorado.

UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) time standard transmission from NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) stations WWV in Fort Collins, Colorado USA and WWVH in Kauai, Hawaii. Transmission consists of voice and time coded reference markers. Used for time reference. Also used by NOAA to broadcast marine storm warnings and geophysical alerts at 18 minutes (WWV) and 45 minutes (WWVH) after the hour. Please note that the 25 MHz transmission is experimental. Note that WWV uses a male voice, WWVH uses a female voice.

When the HF Frequency craps out all of the Teletype machines would run open with constant spaces until we could coordinate a QSY (frequency change) and the crypto gear is restarted.

People need to understand in our digital age, with fiber optics and microwave communications, we are much less susceptible to solar storms than we were in the 1960s.
