Iran death penalty threat for abortion unlawful: UN rights experts
United Nations ^ | November 16, 2021 | staff

Posted on 05/02/2024 7:02:32 AM PDT by Morgana

A new Iranian law that raises the prospect of the death penalty for abortion has been condemned by independent human rights experts, who have declared that is in “clear contravention of international law”.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the experts called on the Iranian authorities to repeal the ‘Youthful Population and Protection of the Family’ law, which was ratified by Iran’s Guardian Council on the first of November.

The law, said the experts, severely restricts access to abortion, contraception, voluntary sterilization services and related information, in direct violation of women’s human rights under international law, and contains a provision stating that if carried out on a large scale, abortion would fall under the crime of “corruption on earth” and carry the death penalty.

“The Iranian Government is taking further steps to use criminal law to restrict the rights of women, for the sake of increasing the number of births, which will effectively force many women and girls to continue unwanted pregnancies to term which would be inherently discriminatory”, the experts declared. Severe restrictions on women’s rights

Abortion in Iran is effectively banned, apart from a few exceptions. The new law puts the final decisions on therapeutic abortion – in case of threat to the life of the pregnant woman or foetal anomalies – in the hands of a panel consisting of a judge, medical doctor and forensic doctor, rather than on the pregnant women, supported by the medical doctor.

For the UN experts, the law violates the rights to life and health, the right to non-discrimination and equality, and to freedom of expression by making it illegal to access a range of reproductive health services and share reproductive rights information.

The law also prohibits free distribution of contraceptive goods, and imposes a ban on voluntary sterilizations for men and women, aside from very exceptional cases. The move, said the experts, will disproportionately impact women in situations of marginalization, and victims of sexual violence. Risk of maternal deaths

In the experts’ view, the law will not stop abortions.

They pointed to data illustrating that “criminalizing the termination of pregnancy does not reduce the number of women who resort to abortion”.

“Instead, it forces women to risk their lives by undergoing clandestine and unsafe procedures.”

According to official data an estimated 300,000 to 600,000 illegal abortions are performed in Iran every year.

Under the law, antenatal screening tests will be restricted, and the health ministry will establish a system to collect information on everyone who goes to a health centre for fertility treatment, pregnancy, delivery, and abortion – a move apparently designed to expand the monitoring of pregnancies and discourage abortions.

“Restricting the access of women to free contraception goods and services will lead to unwanted pregnancies and high maternal mortality”, the experts warned.

“We will closely monitor the impact of this law on maternal deaths and ensure accountability for failure to act with due diligence to prevent the death of women and girls with risk pregnancies, or the death of those that undergo unsafe abortions”, they added. Cruel and degrading

The package of measures contained in the law could, therefore, amount to gender-based violence because women denied safe abortions can incur mental and physical suffering, according to the UN experts.

Moreover, the criminalization of abortion can constitute cruel, degrading, and inhumane treatment, and may amount to torture.

“We urge the Government to immediately repeal the law on ‘Youthful Population and Protection of the Family’ and to take measures to end the criminalization of abortion and to ensure that all women can access all necessary health services, including sexual and reproductive health care, in a manner that is safe, affordable, and consistent with their human rights”, the experts said.

“It's been done before”

True. True. We did it. Look how bloody it was and the fact it succeeded was a miracle from God. Then again countries like ours who did it? We are a tough breed. Not everyone in the world is tough like us. Americans had to fight the British twice and had to be a pain in the ass in order to win. No other country is willing to go that far.

It will be interesting to see if a total Dictatorship like Iran can prevent the distribution of the abortion pill. My bet is on the drug dealers getting richer.

So maybe the UN can pony up their army and send a few battalions of blue helmets to enforce their edict? Oh wait a minute…that would be mostly us. /s

Nateman..you know me

I already know the answer.

some of the abortions in Iran are done by surgery but yes some are done by pill.

Wait for it

I’m still reviewing some articles to post and that is one of them because it’s going to be a “barf alert”

No fan of the Mullahs of Tehran, no fan of abortion either and just as importantly no fan of the meddling United Nations.

The U.N. had one very narrow possible usefulness long ago, which might have been in promoting peace, which it never did and everything else the U.N. has done is exemplified the worst the U.N. could ever try to be - a world government.

“I get it you all don’t like them because they are Muslims but can you all come to an understanding that they do have the same values as us?”

Very few. They are willing to die for their God to get rewarded.

They mistreat women. Coomaraswamy defines domestic violence as “violence that occurs within the private sphere, generally between individuals who are related through intimacy, blood or law... [It is] nearly always a gender-specific crime perpetrated by men against women.” It is used as a strong form of control and oppression.

An-Nisa 4:34 is the 34th verse in the fourth chapter of the Quran. This verse adjudges the role of a husband as protector and maintainer of his wife and how he should deal with disloyalty on her part. Many Muslim scholars saying that it serves as a deterrent from anger-based domestic violence. The translation of the verse, which can read ‘discipline them gently’ is also subject to debate among Muslim scholars. Some conservative translations find that Muslim husbands are permitted to act what is known in Arabic as Idribuhunna with the use of “Strike,” and sometimes as much as to hit, chastise, or beat.

And according to their volum:

“‘93% of Pakistani women experience sexual violence,’” by Mudaser Kazi, Express Tribune, March 8, 2017:

Koran 3:32 – “Say: Obey Allah and the Messenger (Muhammad); but if they turn away, then indeed, Allah does not love the disbelievers.”

Koran 48:29 – “Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; and those with him are forceful against the unbelievers, and merciful among themselves.”

Koran 4:24 – “And (forbidden are) married women except those (captives and slaves) your right hands possess.”

Koran 5:33 – “The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His apostle and strive to make mischief in the land is only this, that they should be murdered or crucified or their hands and their feet should be cut off on opposite sides or they should be imprisoned; this shall be as a disgrace for them in this world, and in the hereafter they shall have a grievous chastisement.”

Koran 9:5 – “When the sacred months have passed, slay the idolaters wherever you find them, and take them captive, and besiege them, and prepare for them each ambush. But if they repent and establish worship and pay the poor-due, then leave their way free. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.”

Koran 9:29 – ”Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the Religion of Truth, from among the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizyah with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.”

Koran 9:73 – “O Prophet! strive hard against the unbelievers and the hypocrites and be unyielding to them; and their abode is hell, and evil is the destination.”

Koran 9:111 – “Surely Allah has bought of the believers their persons and their property for this, that they shall have the garden; they fight in Allah’s way, so they slay and are slain.”

Koran 2:106 – “Whatever communications We abrogate or cause to be forgotten, We bring one better than it or like it. Do you not know that Allah has power over all things?”
“Men have authority over women because Allah has made the one superior to the other, and because they spend their wealth to maintain them. Good women are obedient. They guard their unseen parts because Allah has guarded them. As for those from whom you fear disobedience, admonish them and send them to beds apart and beat them.” —

Qur’an 4:34 -Muhammad “struck me on the chest which caused me pain, and then said: Did you think that Allah and His Apostle would deal unjustly with you?” — Aisha (Sahih Muslim 2127)

Another hadith depicts Muhammad saying: “If a husband calls his wife to his bed [i.e. to have sexual relation] and she refuses and causes him to sleep in anger, the angels will curse her till morning” (Bukhari 4.54.460). And she would in that case be disobedient, hence eligible for beating.

Another hadith has Muhammad saying: “By him in Whose Hand lies my life, a woman can not carry out the right of her Lord, till she carries out the right of her husband. And if he asks her to surrender herself [to him for sexual intercourse] she should not refuse him even if she is on a camel’s saddle” (Ibn Majah 1854).

While sharing the nature of cases reported in 2016 to Madadgaar National Helpline, Madadgaar’s general manager Muhammad Ali Bilgrami briefed that 118 cases of child marriage, 162 of cybercrime, 14 of child abuse, 2,092 of domestic violence, 14 of forced marriage, 562 of harassment, 12 of karo-kari, 2,251 of missing children, 213 of missing women, 792 of mental torture, 5 of rape, 6 of sodomy, 10 of sexual harassment, 7 of sexual abuse and 5 cases of trafficking.
Other verses:

• “Kill the unbelievers wherever you find them.” Koran 2:191
• Make war on the infidels living in your neighbourhood.” Koran 9:123

• “When opportunity arises, kill the infidels wherever you catch them.” Koran 9:5

• “Any religion other than Islam is not acceptable.” Koran 3:85

• “The Jews and the Christians are perverts; fight them.”… Koran 9:30

• “Maim and crucify the infidels if they criticize Islam” Koran 5:33

• “Punish the unbelievers with garments of fire, hooked iron rods, boiling water; melt their skin and bellies.” Koran 22:19

• “The unbelievers are stupid; urge the Muslims to fight them.” Koran 8:65
• “Muslims must not take the infidels as friends.” Koran 3:28
• “Terrorize and behead those who believe in scriptures other than the Qur’an.” Koran 8:12

• “Muslims must muster all weapons to terrorize the infidels.” Koran 8:60

See a lot of western values there? You might want to consider rethinking your ideology on the what they call religion of peace that has been at war with everyone that is not muslim Iinfidels) for centuries all over the world.

How do you change governments in a country controlled by tyrannical leaders? Do the voters in Iran actually have the power to change leaders or to effect any kind of change?

How about the countries of Globohomo ?

Do their voters have the power to effect any kind of change ?

Where on the map of the world are these 'globohomo' countries located. Does Google maps show them? Or are they on some other planet?

If you want to find the limits of the Empire, look for the presence of the Imperial flag.

In those countries, who should voters "vote" for if they want an end to mass immigration, or if they want an end to a corporate globalized economy, or if they want an end to green energy costs and taxes, or if they want an end to LGBT+, gendering, grooming and the rest, or if they want an end to forever overseas wars, or if they want an end to "free trade" and outsourcing ?

Because voters do want an end to all those things. And they have voted lots. And there have been many new governments elected. And nothing changes.

When voting is hijacked and the same people and/or policies remain the same, it's then time for the people to rise up and change by force their regimes. Regimes that control by force their people, have to be removed by force The American revolution is a good example to follow.

You mean, nothing ever changes in western counties and we get the same people and politics all the time, regardless of the voting and democratic freedoms available in those countries?

Name some of those countries, with examples that prove your points.

Immigration, trade policy, green energy taxes, LGBT gay marriage, “Free trade” and outsourcing, Globalization...

USA, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, france, Germany, Italy, Spain, Holland, ... and every other Western country.

The polls at the time, going back to the 1960’s showed that the populations DID NOT WANT any of this.

The countries of the West never wanted mass third world immigration. Polling at the time showed the people of Britain agreed 80 to 90 percent with Enoch Powell on immigration. But that was ignored, he was marginalized and the invasion was allowed to happen.

In California in 1994, the State voted by Referendum to cut off funding for illegals. In 2008, California voted by Referendum to ban gay marriage.

How did those votes matter?

We don't always get everything we want, and often, things don't go our way on one issue or another. But, eventually, things even out, and that's something that never happens in authoritarian governments.

In the U.S. and other western countries, we may take one step backwards, but, we also take one step forward, and things generally end up okay. The U.S., for example, still has the constitution and the bill of rights to protect us from tyranny. That's the same in other democracies. You can't compare the western democracies to any tyrannical regimes. In a democracy, because of all the freedoms people enjoy, it's not easy to get things right all the time. But, the U.S. and other western democracies have managed to preserve their way of life despite all the setbacks. Can't say the same for countries such as Iran or Russia or China or Cuba or Venezuela or N. Korea and other tyrannies. But, we have to always be on guard against attempts to undo the democracies, such as what's happening in current times.

Oh, so, when did the U.S. get rid of the constitution and who did it and when? Same question about the bill of rights.

But, more intimately, when did YOU lose all the rights granted to YOU under the constitution and bill of rights?

The fight continues and many want to undo all of our rights, but as far as I can see, we still are a country with a constitution and a bill of rights.

Perhaps you're the one asleep for the last 50+ years, or maybe you're just imagining things.
