How did those votes matter?

We don't always get everything we want, and often, things don't go our way on one issue or another. But, eventually, things even out, and that's something that never happens in authoritarian governments.

In the U.S. and other western countries, we may take one step backwards, but, we also take one step forward, and things generally end up okay. The U.S., for example, still has the constitution and the bill of rights to protect us from tyranny. That's the same in other democracies. You can't compare the western democracies to any tyrannical regimes. In a democracy, because of all the freedoms people enjoy, it's not easy to get things right all the time. But, the U.S. and other western democracies have managed to preserve their way of life despite all the setbacks. Can't say the same for countries such as Iran or Russia or China or Cuba or Venezuela or N. Korea and other tyrannies. But, we have to always be on guard against attempts to undo the democracies, such as what's happening in current times.
