April 24 (UPI) -- A wildlife rescuer in South Carolina came to the rescue of an alligator found to have been trapped in a drainage pipe for nearly six months.
Matt Kraycar of K&K Wildlife Services said he was summoned by Port Royal Plantation security in Hilton Head when the gator was spotted trapped underneath a grate.
Kraycar said the alligator apparently became stuck while swimming through the pipe in October and had been trapped ever since.
"Well they can go into brumation, which is basically like hibernation for reptiles," Kraycar told WTOC-TV. "So as it gets cooler, they're going to shut their body down. So by doing that, he doesn't really need to eat as much as he typically would during the summer, and I'm sure there were still fish and turtles coming through those pipes as well, so it didn't look like he was starving by any means."
He said the reptile had minor injuries including a chaffed snout from rubbing up against the grate, but will make a full recovery in the wild.
Must be GATOR WEEK on Discovery Channel..................
Hungry boy
Six months is a bit unbelievable...............
I dunno, my wife’s kinfolk (from LA) have hunted those things and say they can ‘sleep’ for a long time.
He looks pissedβ¦..
I would be too!.................
I suppose 6 months is possible.
After all, they have survived through many Ice Ages.................
If they can survive this I’d say 6 months in a pipe is plausible...however, how do they know it was 6 months? π€
Video shows an alligator ‘frozen’ in ice during a cold blast in Texas β but it’s still alive
Maybe the Gator was wearing an Apple watch..............It keeps track of sleep time...............
I remember that. It was during the ice storm.
ππ€£ππ€£ππ€£π......................
It’s funny, kind of, but most people really can’t fathom how common they are East of the Rio Grande.
They are up and down the three forks of the Trinity. We have them here at Cedar Creek Lake for sure, but are rather shy. Because nobody feeds them!
My game warden friend was telling me about one in Kaufman city lake, but it moved on. They do migrate.
There is also an alligator ‘refuge’ in s.e. Dallas County near Parsons slough. Has signs up and all.
They have a taxidermist one at the museum at Fair Park in Dallas. 14ft. or so, it was killed when they were building I20 over the river in s.Dallas.
There is also a big guy who hangs out at the Kings creek golf course. Signs say Do NotFeed Him! He has a name, I cannot remember.
Now I gotta watch Happy Gilmore....
So alligators now can read?
Har, har.
It’s where they(game wardens) relocate them, which is stupid.
Signs warn the public in case they try to fish there. As if they can read.....
