As Major League Baseball celebrates Jackie Robinson and his pioneering contributions to the game, I can’t help but think about the fact that the league is reporting a historically low number of Black American players in its ranks: only 6%.
I think this is a teachable moment at a time when diversity efforts across various arenas (no pun intended) have come under attack. Major League Baseball, unfortunately, is a prime example of what it looks like to talk the talk without always walking the walk.

what they’ve lost in baseball they’ve more than made up for in the NFL and certainly the NBA
[[a historically low number of Black American players in its ranks]]
That’s because sports is work- and doesn’t pay as well as hip hop, rap, etc- for most people- easier to speak into a microphone than to run aroudn bases
There are only so many black professional athletes available and those that left baseball went to football and basketball.
If black males make up 6% of the population, then how is there a problem with 6% of the major league players being black?
I say we need Diversity in football and basketball. Too many black players.
Where’s the Inclusion of whites? I want my equity.
Maybe they are not fans of baseball, so they do not play the sport. DEI is stupid.
Crimea River.
You had Hank Aaron, Ernie Banks and Willie Mays. But they all played baseball before LBJ became president.
It's kind of hard to play baseball if your dad never got you into it.
You’ll never hear anyone complaining about the lack of white NFL and NBA players.
Whoever wrote this is a moron or dishonest.
The culture of many inner city youth is not represented in MLB as much as the NBA or NFL. Secondly, there are not as many baseball fields as basketball courts in the inner city. Football is intertwined with public schools where most inner city youth attend.
This is a very good point.
The vast majority of young black males just don’t like baseball, and no amount of money thrown at the alleged “problem” through programs and other social engineering efforts is going to change that fact.
Merit.
Black kids do not play baseball.
Their heroes are not baseball players.
The opposite is true for white, hispanic and asian kids.
I don't think about it and I'm a seam-head (aka baseball nut). If blacks don't want tp play baseball, WGAS?!
I haven’t heard anyone claim black men were Chased out of MLB. They haven’t chosen that sport.
How come no one is mentioning the NHL? The percentage of black players is now over half of what it is in MLB, and someday soon it will pass it up.
There are a lot of blacks that play in the MLB. They are from other countries. And they are very appreciative of the opportunity to play a game and make a ton of money.
Lots and lots of Latinos in MLB. I guess they don’t count for the DEI warriors?
What a crock. Black athletes are dominant in football and basketball. Black Latino players are all over MLB, so let’s cut the BS. The purpose of these racist articles goes hand in hand with the advertising business of downplaying white men in the US.
