A Brooklyn woman who squinted at the 2017 solar eclipse for 10 seconds without proper eye protection is now warning others of the “irreversible eye damage” she suffered — including a blind spot in the middle of her left iris.
Bridget Kyeremateng, 29, told The Post on Monday — hours before a solar eclipse was expected to be partially visible in the Big Apple — that she looked up at the spectacle without any eye protection after being unable to secure a pair of protective glasses, thinking “a couple of seconds wouldn’t do anything.
“I couldn’t focus on the sun or the exact curvature of the moon. I thought I would close one of my eyes to get a better focus. I could barely see anything, but I stared at the sun for a good 10 to 15 seconds before my eyes were starting to not feel good, so I walked inside,” recalled Kyeremateng, who works in marketing in the Big Apple.

This is where I’m confused...they state it’s no brighter than the sun normally is...so why did this happen?
I believe staring at the sun regardless of an eclipse or not is a no no.
Eclipses have ALWAYS gathered a huge amount of interest by people. So there should be millions and million blinded over the millennia? Right?

It doesn’t straight up make you go blind. It just damages them. It’s like tinnitus from being at the range without protection.
As I just posted on another thread, I saw a solar eclipse in 1979 without special glasses. Looked right at it during totality, then stopped looking when the edge of the sun showed again. But I did have to have cataract surgery only 39 years afterward.

When Chuck Norris stared at the sun, the sun went blind.
It is just easier to look at during an eclipse because the sun is partially covered. Sunsets should still be fine unless you happen to be on the Arctic circle and are at high risk of getting UV rays bouncing off highly reflective snow surfaces.

10 seconds is a long damn time to be staring at the sun.
Stupidity has it’s own rewards & they are usually painful especially if you insist on being stupid!

We took off the sun shield glasses after it reached totality and saw the corona. As soon as the smallest sliver of the disc reappeared the shields went back on. Those 3 minutes of totality were amazing.
