Sydney Sweeny isn’t the hot young thing of the moment because of her two obvious calling cards. There are plenty of actresses who can match her jiggle for jiggle. Sweeny is having a boomlet because, of the current under-30 crop of rising actresses, she is far and away the nekkidist.
Of what I’ve seen, her best performance is still in season 1 of The White Lotus, and she kept her clothes on in that. She is completely hilarious there, so maybe she has some comedic chops.
Her breakout role was in Euphoria, which I had determined not to watch because everything I had read about it sounded trashy. The hype kept building, so in my newfound role as a film critic, I decided to check it out to see for myself. I turned it off halfway through the first episode. Yes, it is trash of the sort that has always attracted a certain class of viewers.
Apart from the above, what she seems to be good at is the sexual tease. There are some actors who are able to elevate even pedestrian scripts. Sydney Sweeney doesn’t impress me as one of them. She did play one of Charlie Manson’s girls in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and that’s on my list for a rewatch because I’ve gotten interested in the amazing list of cameo appearances that I overlooked the first time. Maybe she’s good in that.
