What Happens if It’s Cloudy During an Eclipse?

Next week, crowds will flock into cities like Indianapolis, Cleveland, and Dallas for a chance to view a total solar eclipse, a rare event which occurs when the moon completely covers the sun for a few short minutes.

There is one factor that could complicate the experience for eclipse watchers: clouds. Cloudy skies are known to dull the effects of total eclipses, making them less dramatic. That could spoil a celestial event people in the U.S. won’t get to see again for two decades.

Seems like there will be heavy cloud cover over Dallas during the eclipse, and some lib will say it's global warming, without realizing the age old saying, "April showers bring May flowers".

Then look at it on the local news as they will get an aircraft and go above the clouds. High tech. And if you buy into this thread, they will be closer and will get a better shot anyway.

It is like a daily eclipse in Ireland where the sun is blocked out by the clouds and rain.

It will be the fault of MAGA Republicans. Red states will probably have a better chance of clear skies than blue states.

In 1999 there was a total eclipse that went across much of Europe...but for a large number of people there were heavy clouds blocking the sun. I was in Graz, Austria, where it was cloudy...but luckily the clouds parted in time for us to witness the total phase of the eclipse.

What Happens if It’s Cloudy During an Eclipse?

All the frogs come out and invade the homes and businesses.

Then locusts come out and eat all the crops.

Lighter clouds tend to dissipate in the totality zone. Not always but frequently. With heavy clouds you’re about out of luck.

Our plan is near Cleveland where it’s forecast to be rather sunny with light clouds.

Our plan was to follow the forecast and head south if necessary. South looks to be bad on Monday.

It will get just as “dark” if it is cloudy or sunny. It will just not be as a “dramatic” a change.

How dark - perhaps similar to Civil Twilight, closer to the of the End Evening Civil Twilight spectrum?

A lot depends on the umbral width.

Re: 16 - I’d be more concerned about a flying saucer.

A LARGE flying saucer.
