The Athletics, as part of their efforts to relocate to Las Vegas in time for the 2028 season, will play their home games for the 2025-27 seasons at Sutter Health Park in Sacramento, California, the team announced on Thursday. The deal includes an option for a fourth season.
The A's lease with the City of Oakland is set to expire at the end of this season, yet the A's rejected a five-year extension on the lease of Oakland Coliseum. That, plus an apparent desire to retain as much of their local broadcasting revenue as possible (a factor that my have dissuaded them from temporarily relocating to Salt Lake City or other out-of-state possibilities), led the A's to the capital city of California.
The A's do not intend to change their name to reflect their Sacramento residency. Instead, they'll be known simply by their nickname, according to The Athletic's Evan Drellich.
Team officials met with the city of Sacramento Wednesday, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, a day after saying they were "far apart on the terms needed to agree on an extension" to stay in Oakland.

Is it time to look into MLB's antitrust exemption? Maybe it's time to revive the Continental League.
Whatever you think negatively about Oakland, you could find the same traits in 2/3rds of pro sports cities.
Fisher did not negotiate in good faith. Oakland had a stadium deal on the table, and Fisher lied to MLB owners and said they didn't. They could have offered him everything he asked for, and he would have found a reason to reject it.
Bay Area already has a team, that is well supported.
I am thinking many fans will be taking souvenirs after the last home game of the season.
Yes but because they're legalizing sports gambling. And there's a problem with Ohtani.
Pard it’s not about the fans. Major Sports don’t give a damn about the home team fans. It about revenue streams. Advertising, gambling, viewer ratings and 💩. Fans ain’t 💩. It is what it is. As far as they’re concerned you can go suck a rock. Just send us your money and build us a stadium. You have to be blind not to see it. Regards
You won’t see Ohtani hook to anything, right or wrong. He’s a moneymaker and they aren’t letting it go. PERIOD!
Oakland A’s were the second best team in baseball history after the New York Yankees.
Connie Mack was a class act, much like Tom Landry.
Oakland should be glad they’re leaving.
Cornelius McGillicuddy.
Wore a suit and hat.
Selling the A’s staying in Oakland....requires you to consider the lawless nature of Oakland, lack of adult leadership in the city, and average attendance for 2023 (10,276 for home-games).
They haven’t drawn over 1-million fans since 2019.
I’m not saying Vegas is the answer....just that staying in Oakland doesn’t seem to make business-sense.
Also, look over at the Giants....they still in 2023...maintained 2.5-million for the whole season.
Oakland has gone from 3 major pro teams (Raiders, Warriors, As) to nothing in just a few years.
its about big money, ad money, gambling money....
all the sports have gone to hell....even college.....
its too bad because I use to really like sports but I find myself so turned off by they espn money and hype.
“Oakland A’s were the second best team in baseball history after the New York Yankees.”
They’re going to set a record that will be tough to beat: Most Moved Franchise.
Yep and it won’t get better. I grew up idolizing Lombardi, Bart Starr, Yankees and Mantle, and loving to play the game with my friends. The athletes are still great, but the business sucks. Players are cattle and fans are lice to the owners. Money is King, as long as the lice build the stadiums, and they bet on who has the best cow it’ll continue.
Based upon what metric? It’s not regular season wins (Giants are second, A’s are 17th), Postseason wins (Cardinals are second, A’s are 12th), or World Series titles (Cardinals are second, A’s are 3rd).

Ditto here. Couldn’t wait for spring to oil up the glove and start playing with the guys again. Who didn’t like Mantle and Maris? Who didn’t pretend to be Whitey Ford or Sandy Koufax?
The SPORT is the same, mostly, but the business end has degenerated into a cesspit.
Some great teams in Oakland over the years. It’s HOT in Vegas in the summer. Maybe they’ll all be night games.
I was once a sports fan but I no longer care about any of it. I only get exposed to it now here on FR. Not caring about it is quite liberating and saving me lots of money.
Moneyball.
