On this, the fourth day of April, one thousand eight hundred and sixty-four, is to be opened, in this City, the great Metropolitan Fair, in aid of the United States Sanitary Commission. According to the printed pamphlet issued by the committees, it is designed that this exhibition shall be "something much larger than a fair in the modern acceptation of the term;" and to judge by the amount of money contributed, the number and variety of goods to be exhibited and sold, the design will be much more than accomplished. The similar fair at Chicago realized $60,000; at Boston, $140,000; at Cincinnati, $250,000. At New-York, it is hoped there will be realized $1,250,000.
To aid the object of the undertaking our merchants have been called on for their goods, our mechanics for their handy work; our farmers to send in specimens of their husbandry; our busy factories invited to contribute the products of their untiring industry; the ladies of the metropolis have taken from their delicate hands their jewels and offered them on the altar of patriotism; the antiquary has given his much-prized relic; the scholar his loved volume of lore; the artist the pictured realization of his fancy; and the widow has come forward with her mite. In fact all professions, sexes and classes have been desired to loan or give, according to their capacity, in aid of the great and sacred cause of National unity.
The grand military parade, according to the published orders of Gen. DIX, will take place from Fourteenth-street at 2 o'clock P.M. There will be not less than 10,000 troops on the ground when the different regiments are assembled. The line of march was not determined upon yesterday, but will be made known this morning.
