Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill on Monday that will prohibit children younger than 14 from joining social media in the state. Those who are 14 or 15 will need a parent’s consent before they join a platform.
The bill, HB3, also directs social media companies to delete the existing accounts of those who are under 14. Companies that fail to do so could be sued on behalf of the child who creates an account on the platform. The minor could be awarded up to $10,000 in damages, according to the bill. Companies found to be in violation of the law would also be liable for up to $50,000 per violation, as well as attorney’s fees and court costs.
“Ultimately, [we’re] trying to help parents navigate this very difficult terrain that we have now with raising kids, and so I appreciate the work that’s been put in,” DeSantis said in remarks during the bill-signing ceremony.

Probably no other one single force hurt Trump as badly as Social Media in 2020: 1. Twitter under Dorsey hiding the Hunter Biden Laptop story alone possibly lost the election (based on surveys by the New York Post), FBs Zuckerberg spending almost 1 billion helping democrats to vote and biasing their Algorithm against repubs. That’s just 2 examples off the top of my head.
Here is the now non-candidate Desantis restricting Social Media for that reason but especially and most importantly for the scientifically proven negative effects Social Media has on developing minds of children. Proving yet again he is a true conservative,
If this story is true, then I disagree with him on this-—parents need to be parents and stop using the government as the “parent”.
The parents should have the say.
This is a good thing. Frankly, I don’t think young kids should have smart phones or internet access.
Fear not.....the haters will be along directly.
*If this story is true, then I disagree with him on this-—parents need to be parents and stop using the government as the “parent”.*
Come on. You have freedom of speech until you work for someone. Look at how many people who have been fired over tweets.
Surgery on transgendered kids w/o parent consent? I really don’t believe it could happen but we can be sure there’s people who think it should.
What constitutes “social media”? Is Free Republic an social media platform?
Parents have always relied on reasonable societal guardrails to protect their children when the parent cannot be around. There's nothing wrong with that expectation. Otherwise we might was well become "helicopter" parents to the extreme.
Nope-—still wrong and how we got in this problem in the first place because “parents are obeying their children” and not the other way around. No matter how hard you try, you CAN NOT legislate morality!
I would agree with you however, have you seen what passes for a “parent” nowadays?
Meatball is turning into Mussolini.
ROFL!!!
That is an incredibly stupid argument, always has been. Yes, you absolutely CAN legislate morality, and we've been doing it as long as there has been legislation. Prohibiting murder, rape, and robbery is legislating morality.
See #11 ... the idiots have arrived.
My understanding is that there’s a provision for parents to override this. And even if there isn’t……
Why do people have their panties in a twist over this? There are many age related restrictions: voting, tobacco, military service, alcohol, employment, medical decisions, driving, marriage, etc., etc., etc. The Florida legislature and DeSantis are doing the right thing.
On the contrary, you cannot legislate anything EXCEPT morality.
I hope they never come to Florida. And if they’re already here, nobody’s preventing them from leaving.
More predictable than intelligent 😏
How’s that going for you-—because laws on rape and murder stopped happening when we made laws. It happened a lot less when we were a moral society. Laws didn’t slow down rape and immorality, societal norms and accountability to God did.
But I digress-—I wasn’t talking about the obvious (rape, Murder, stealing) because they are the 10 commandment laws and go without saying. I’m talking about these stupid laws of banning certain websites, setting curfews for driving, drinking ages, etc. These should all be left to the parent-—However, our society has dumbed down. That’s what I mean that you can’t legislate morality-—we have to get back to having a heart for Christ. All the laws in the world will do absolutely nothing without a change of heart.
FIFY:
“On the contrary, you cannot legislate anything without morality”.
Absolute truth!!! We could have a million laws on “gun violence”——whom do these laws affect? The moral only-—the immoral could care less about “morality laws”. If you have a completely immoral society, will creating “morality laws” change anything? These laws only affect the moral, that are following “the law” regardless if it’s on the books or now.
OK, you’ve convinced me.
Laws against murder, rape, and robbery are worthless. Repeal them all! You can’t legislate morality ...
ROFL!!!
It’s a stupid argument.
