Probably no other one single force hurt Trump as badly as Social Media in 2020: 1. Twitter under Dorsey hiding the Hunter Biden Laptop story alone possibly lost the election (based on surveys by the New York Post), FBs Zuckerberg spending almost 1 billion helping democrats to vote and biasing their Algorithm against repubs. That’s just 2 examples off the top of my head.
Here is the now non-candidate Desantis restricting Social Media for that reason but especially and most importantly for the scientifically proven negative effects Social Media has on developing minds of children. Proving yet again he is a true conservative,
If this story is true, then I disagree with him on this-—parents need to be parents and stop using the government as the “parent”.
The parents should have the say.
This is a good thing. Frankly, I don’t think young kids should have smart phones or internet access.
Fear not.....the haters will be along directly.
What constitutes “social media”? Is Free Republic an social media platform?
Meatball is turning into Mussolini.
My understanding is that there’s a provision for parents to override this. And even if there isn’t……
Why do people have their panties in a twist over this? There are many age related restrictions: voting, tobacco, military service, alcohol, employment, medical decisions, driving, marriage, etc., etc., etc. The Florida legislature and DeSantis are doing the right thing.
Bad law. This should be up t the parents not the state.
Now the kiddos will have more time to watch porn where no age verification applie.
DeSantis should know better.
Good, needs to occur nationally. Hey parents, your kid could get $10,000 for each account! That might go nicely into a college fund or pay some bills to cover Bidenflation.
Yes. Teenages need to get off their computers and phones and spend more face time doing productive things with family and friends; devloping true personal relationships out of the “virtual” sphere. “Cyber bullying” is only possible if you are in the cyber sphere or care what is going on there.
There is already federal regs on this so this is not something new.
This isn’t about morality but contract law.
It’s not the government’s job to raise kids. Remember Hillary’s “It Take a Village” book. It doesn’t take a village, nor the government. It’s the responsibility of the parents to be in control of their children’s lives, and teach them properly. This is an over-reaching move, and will be no doubt, heavily challenged in court.
Good, which will likely last at long as the first liberal judge imagines the Founders would never support this - if he/she even cares.
This is a good thing. It’s hard to believe lots of folks here disagree. And this is why this nation is doomed. Even the small subset of politically active citizens who comprise FR, who know right from wrong and truth from fiction, can’t agree on something so basic.
What is really needed and should have been implemented from the start is parental control and monitoring (mandated by federal law) on all minor accounts online and on cell/smartphones.
Our nation’s youth have been irreparably harmed by the Internet and smartphones due to porn, abuse, bullying, etc. It’s even worse than public education brainwashing and the entertainment industry (when considered separately).
EPeople are missing the point!
Whatever it is that the kids are doing on their phones is making them really stupid. We see it here in our Daycare Center especially with what we call the “Covid Babies”.
We are working to reverse it, but...
The science that is coming out about this problem is very disturbing. What we know about early brain development suggests that these kids as a whole will always be significantly dumber than any generation before. The teachers are saying they have never seen anything like it before. I cannot predict the societal impact, but I must say that those who are commenting against this law cannot show that they are aware of this problem. The entire legislate morality argument shows that they do not even realize what we are talking about. The children are being crippled intelectually.
The behavioral problems have gotten so much worse that the teachers I know are quitting or are tempted to quit and you cannot blame them. These kids can NOT able to control themselves.
Perhaps we can debate whether DeSantis’ law will help or not, but suggest a more effective way to deal with this ver real and very serious problem.
Three issues:
Teenager’s mental illness!
Preteens, ages 10-14 social development!
Early childhood brain development!
