There’s a caldera in the Mammoth Mountain/Bishop area. If/when it blows it will take out much of the western states. Yosemite isn’t too far away.

I remember the end of world back in the early 80s when all 9 planets were in alignment. It was early in the morning when I went ouside to go to work and I looked up into a crystal clear rural North Carolina sky and all that were visible to the naked eye. It was beautiful. The Chicoms had been forecasting woe and destruction for months but nothing happened.

When an eclipse happens, even and annular eclipse, the Sun and Moon are inline with Earth so that gravitational pulls and stresses are additive. Pulling and tugging at the faults, not just the New Madrid Fault, but ALL of them all over the Earth.
It’s been over 200 years since the last ‘Big One’ on the New Madrid Fault and it’s associated smaller faults. Entire cities and towns have been created all over the midwest. Farms and highways have cleared billions of tons of trees and hills. The weight distribution has changed drastically since the early 1800’s.
Even the San Andreas could give way.....................
(There’s also an alignment of 5 of the planets at this time, too.)

Yeah Covid, Y2K, the eminent collapse of the 3 Gorges Dam, the ending of the Mayan calendar, all epically bad.
Sort of like the Y2K thing. Total eclipses are just the shadow of the moon sweeping over the earth. Most of the time the shadow never meets the earth because the orbital planes of the earth and moon and the sun are not aligned. Off by about 5 degrees with each other. Thus the moons shadow just goes off into space most of the time.

Going through three in three weeks would sure make you believe the world was ending.
We were living in Chesterfield, MO on Nov 9, 1968 (I was 17) when a big New Madrid quake hit. I was working in the garage and didn't know what was happening when Dad came running out of the house yelling "get out!" We ran to the back yard and watched things shake, then it was over. Then five years later, I decided I wanted more of that fun and moved to San Francisco.

I just looked at some website after thinking that the gravitational forces from the moon and sun lined up would be minimal. For a 180 pound person you will be 1.6 ounces lighter - so minimal.
HOWEVER- that article also stated that the effect on the earth itself is a 40 mm (1.5 inches) change in the crust of the earth causing a small bulge (spread out over 1000 kilometers). I don’t know if that is enough to cause earthquakes, but it is more of an effect than I thought it would be.
Spread the ground apart a bit, more water can go through the materials and into fault zones, etc... Maybe. Although I think a similar thing would happen every time we have a new moon.
But yes, the New Madrid Fault will cause another major EQ some day and cause HUGE amounts of death and destruction. I’m in the Seattle area, so we have our own concerns.
