I’m starting the plant purchasing time of year. I found some nice ferns to hang on the front porch, and I love impatiens scattered around here and there. For the first time I’ve ever seen it, the garden section at Meijer had some items on clearance that looked just fine. So I bought one “instant planter” that had a fern in the center with pink begonia and pink spotted plant (can’t remember what that’s called) on the outer edges.

On a whim I bought one broccolini plant to see if I can have any success with it. Any suggestions for size of container vs in ground and how large a space. I know nothing about them except that we love to eat them. Not sure what to expect.

Whew. The last of the nights in the 20’s seems to be over.
Got the garden uncovered and thankfully (and hopefully) will not have to do it again.

Got some rain yesterday. Had to take the long way home again

When I went the long way, I went ahead past the house and down the hill to see what the second creek looked like.

There was a nice hump in the middle. Not sure if there was something on the bridge or up against it causing that. The two creeks are about 1500 foot apart and around an s-curve so you can't see one from the other. Makes one more hesitant to cross one just to find out the other is impassable.

I'm wanting to fertilize the veggies but the soil is saturated right now so it will have to wait. They're calling for another inch Sunday night.

Local AG research center says they got 0.88 inches yesterday but the state of the creeks say closer to 2 inches. Really need to get me that rain gauge - tipping bucket. Think I'll go ahead and get one this week.

New neighbor's been clearing trees so most of the property is bare dirt right now and very little of it is flat. Bad timing. Who knows how much top soil is washing away. There's not much to begin with over there.

Made two trips to Menard's last weekend for chain link top rail. Bought four planning to run them lengthwise like a ridge beam and then decided to do cross members width-wise to start so I went back and got three more. Might get them put up today. Feeling lazy. Maybe putting shoes on will help.

The past week was a blustery one here in Central Missouri. Several squall lines came through bringing with them lots of wind and a bit of rain too - 2.5" spread over three storms.

I was able to get all of the mowing done Saturday while Mrs. Augie, three of our kids, two DiL, and five of the grands went to the zoo in St. Louis. After that was done I ran the tiller over the patch in the back where I used to plant the sunflower field, seeded it with Kentucky bluegrass, timothy, and fescue, then dragged it in with a cattle panel behind Mrs. Augie's golf cart. After THAT was done I spent a couple hours moving dirt from the giant heap into the new garden space. It will be a few days before it's dry enough to get over it with the tractor and tiller, but it needed some rain to help the loose dirt begin to settle.

I have three Dunstan Chestnut trees that still need to be planted. All of the spots in the grove along our driveway have been filled. I planted three others in the front yard where the kitchen garden used to be. I'm thinking I'll put the last three in the field that I sowed to grass on Saturday.

The yukon gold spuds that I buried at the edge of my compost heap have sprouted and are looking healthy. If they make a good crop I'll try it the same way next spring. Anything I can come up with that reduces my maintenance time in the garden is likely to happen at this stage of the game.
