Absolutely. My guess is he asked if he could come. Also, the Secret Service would need to send an advance team and they’d have found out any negatives. I suspect Trump is a very polite man and would not show up at a family event without asking.
A man like Trump can’t just go somewhere without planning because of security.
There’s nothing wrong with public officials attending even without permission if they are there for the right reasons. Having to ask permission puts the family in the position of being damned if they say yes and damned if they say no.
50 years ago no one would have thought anything of it and would have seen it as a sign of empathy for the family.
Since it’s a different world, both her attending and the person confronting her were equally bad decisions.
