WASHINGTON, Saturday, March 19.
The excitement about the threatened raid by STUART has subsided. Notwithstanding the statements that the report in the TIMES was a canard, without foundation, it was nevertheless substantially true, and nothing but the prompt action of Gen. PLEOSANTON prevented STUART from carrying out his intentions. A detachment of the enemy crossed the Rappahannock near Fredericksburgh, Wednesday night, and the following day, Col. BRYAN, Eighteenth Pennsylvania Cavalry, captured twenty of the party, including two well-known scouts, MCILVAINE and MCREYNOLDS, of YOUNG's brigade, one of the brigades stationed at Fredericksburgh, who captured the Third Division Cavalry mail, last September. Yesterday morning a detachment of the enemy crossed Morton's Ford, and drove in the Seventh Michigan pickets, but were subsequently repulsed and forced to recross the river. The Star of this evening says: "From parties who arrived here from the front to-day we learn that a rebel advance was anticipated yesterday, and marching orders were issued to nearly all the command. After everything had been packed however, and all was in readiness for a move, the order was countermanded, and things settled themselves to their usual order. There are rumors afloat at the front that the rebel cavalry is massing at Fredericksburgh, preparatory to a move north. Our cavalry, or a portion of it, is also on the move, but it would not be proper to say whither. Firing was heard all along the line yesterday, but this was supposed by many to be merely artillery practice. This morning, however, firing was heard in the direction of Dumfries, and it sounded as though there was some skirmishing going on."
