GEN. GRANT IN COMMAND: His Official Order Announcing the Fact; Present Headquarters to be with the Army of the Potomac (3/18/1864)

NASHVILLE, Thursday, March 17.

Gen. GRANT formally assumed the command of the armies of the United States to-day. The following is his order on the subject:

HEADQUARTERS OF THE ARMIES OF THE UNITED STATES, NASHVILLE, Tenn., March 17, 1864.

GENERAL ORDERS, No. 12. -- In pursuance of the following order of the President:

EXECUTIVE MANSION, WASHINGTON, D.C., March 10, 1864. -- Under the authority of the Act of Congress to appoint the grade of Lieutenant-General in the army, of February 29, 1864, Lieutenant-General ULYSSES S. GRANT, U.S.A., is appointed to the command of the armies of the United States.

(Signed) ABRAHAM LINCOLN.

-- I assume command of the armies of the United States. Headquarters will be in the field, and, until further orders, will be with the Army of the Potomac. There will be an office headquarters in Washington, D.C., to which all official communications will be sent, except those from the army where the headquarters are at the date of their address.

NASHVILLE, Thursday, March 17.

Gen. GRANT leaves for Washington on Saturday, and repairs immediately to the front.

His staff is composed of the officers formerly with him in the military division of the Mississippi. Among them are Brig.-Gen. RAWLINGS, Chief of Staff; Lieut.-Col. BOWERS, Capt. G.K. LEET, Capt. E.S. PARKER, Assistant Adjutant-General; Capt. H.W. JONES, Assistant Quartermaster-General, and Capt. BALLAN. Lieut.-Col. DUFF, late Chief of Artillery, goes as senior aide-de-camp.

Gen. SHERMAN is due here to-night, and will assume command of this military division.

Gen. DODGE is in the city.

I’m sure Grant thought he was doing the right thing when he took up arms to violently overthrow the pro-slavery United States Constitution rather than allow Congress and the states to adopt a future constitutional amendment to abolish slavery peacefully; if that is what he did.

Setting that aside, at least today we have a federal government with the unchallenged authority to force states to adopt federal rules governing the size of mudflaps on trucks driving state highways.
