I don't mean to be unkind, but they went looking for a geology expert, and the best they could find was a college student? Yeah, a PhD candidate is much better than an 18-year old freshman, but still ...

PhD candidates may be more up to date than some old-timers. If you’re doing literature review (as you would while working on your own research) you are essentially compelled to read everything new. In this person’s case it sounds like their research is what’s driving the reporting, so they may be the perfect person to talk to.

That’s what I thought too. Modern news is trash. I would guess the other info in the story could be suspect also.
