Restaurants Can Convince Customers to Tip Even More With This Simple Trick, Study Reveals
New York Post ^ | March 11, 2024 | Alex Mitchell

New research has found that putting a smiley face emoji on a bill can bolster the average restaurant server’s tip by a whopping 11%, according to a study published last month in the International Journal of Hospitality Management.

“We establish that when emojis are included with tip suggestions during the payment transaction, customers tip at a higher percentage than when no emojis are included,” the authors state. Specifically, the largest increase in customer generosity came in scenarios where multiple emojis were shown with suggested tip amounts. Neutral faces accompanied lower gratuities and, as the recommended percentage grew, so did the emojis’ cheek-to-cheek smile.

At full-service restaurants, the presence of emojis saw rises in the average tip go from 22.86% to 25.38% — an overall 11% relative increase. Typically, a 18%-to-20% gratuity represents satisfaction.

Would a cross section of that data reveal an even increase among multiple groups studied, say Canadian or Amish, etc?

“Typically, a 18%-to-20% gratuity represents satisfaction.”

It used to be 10%

Lately I've been going to the butcher shop and getting the thickest ribeye I can buy. Yes, super expensive but cheaper than ordering same at a restaurant.

Cast iron skillet at home, heat high with avocado oil. Salted steaks at least six hours prior. Three minutes on stovetop before flipping. Another three minutes on second side. Flip again and put in 400 degree oven for another five minutes before flipping again and bring to stovetop in which I melt a quarter stick of butter to spoon over the top with garlic cloves and pepper.

Let rest for 10 minutes.

Then eat.

Before they taxed tips, I was grateful for anything I was tipped.
I tip for service and good food only.

My mother worked at a drive-in decades ago. She had skates
and worked for tips only.

Waitressed weekends in college and had to be there at 5a.m.

Customers in the morning were still drunk and tipped fabulously.

Afternoon they were hung over and barely tipped at all!

My grandson does that. When low on money he buys a big piece of meat on sale.
Smokes it and has meat with various pasta dishes for several days.

I would say inflation, but I don’t remember the last time I gave only 10%. For me it has always depended on service, and how much the employee had to do to actually wait on me.

I usually tip 20% (or more) unless the service wasn’t very good.

That’s how we used to do our ribeyes, almost exactly.

Then on one getaway we discovered pecan wood chips on a grill. I didn’t check to see if you’re from the south (and I would guess not by your handle), but if you enjoy pecans in any fashion, I would highly recommend this iteration to put into your repertoire. We are now fairly addicted to pecans as a flavor in the background. For reference, my husband is a Long Island guy that I have been converting to Southern ways for over 40 years. He loves the subtle yet smoky flavoring that the pecan imparts. Give it a try sometime! Bon Appetit!

“I would say inflation,”

It is a percent.

Gee, what effect does cleaning the sticky table, checking on us, getting the orders right and effective/timely service have on tips?

/s

Holy crap.

At Cracker Barrel, the "Canadians" and the "Amish" are the worst tippers.
