A Nebraska woman has been arrested after allegedly using a sneaky trick to pump more than 7,400 gallons of gas for free over six months.
Dawn Thompson, 45, allegedly used a rewards card 510 times between November 2022 and June 2023, pumping 7,413.59 gallons of gas worth $27,860.27, according to the affidavit.
She allegedly exploited a pump glitch that allowed her to swipe a rewards card twice, switching the pump from regular mode to demo mode. From there, she pumped gas for free.
Staff at Pump & Pantry in Lincoln, Nebraska, first reported someone involved in 'some sort of fuel scam' back in June last year, according to KOLN.
During the investigation, it was revealed that the fuel pumps received a software update in November 2022, which caused the glitch.
Lincoln Police got a call from a loss prevention manager at Bosselman Enterprise in October last year, saying someone had been participating in a fuel scam.
The manager discovered the system update had allowed people to enter the pump into a demo mode and pump free gas.
One card had been consistently used to pump gas for free, and surveillance footage also captures the woman refueling her vehicle multiple times.
Authorities later identified 45-year-old Thompson by tracing the card's information.
Between November 13, 2022, and June 1, 2023, Thompson's rewards card was allegedly used 510 times, including multiple swipes on the same day.
Investigators also talked to a second person who allegedly used the card last year. The unidentified woman claimed she paid Thompson for using the card to get 'discounted fuel.'

Scam? It sounds like the glitch was on their side?
So she used the undocumented software feature (aka bug) to steal gas, not once but 510 times AND sold use of her card presumably for profit. She’s got a lot to answer for. Also, so does the software developer. They probably have deeper pockets.
Let’s see. 180 days in 6 months. Divide 7400 gallons that’s 40+ gallons per day. Where did she put it? Musta had a long commute.
Huh
Well, no one complained at the time.
A common electronic thief. Lock her up
I have card for my business that won’t let me swipe it twice in 48 hours. I’m prompted to see the cashier if I try it. Pain in the butt since I need gas and diesel.
Yeah had to include others
Clearly she was stealing gasoline in quantities above and beyond her personal use. Probably doing this trick to supply fuel to friends and family members as well.
So stupid. Did she really think she wouldn’t be caught eventually? If she had done the trick once or twice, she could have played dumb and pretended she wasn’t intentionally taking advantage of a pump malfunction. But you do it 500+ times, it’s not accidentally benefiting from a glitch. It’s obvious to everyone that you’re a thief. And there are cameras everywhere. And your vehicles have license plates.
Years ago when I was still working, the vending machine operator came one day. After he left, the vending machine was running on “free” mode. A fellow employee emptied the vending machine. He put all the snacks in his desk.
Woman gets free fuel using this one simple trick. Gas stations HATE her!
Good thing nothing like this could ever happen to electronic voting machines.
You vote for your candidate twice and then a reset happens at 3 AM.
“7,413.59 gallons of gas”
...in just over 6 months? I might use 300-400 gallons in that time. Not sure what I’d do with the rest of it.
Where is one going to store 7,413.59 gallons of gas? Even if they could, prolonged storage of gasoline is not recommended, as it can lead to the formation of harmful varnish, gum, or solids that can clog fuel lines, filters, and injectors.
I guess that’s why Biden got rid of the strategic petroleum reserve. Smart.
I guess it didn’t dawn on her that digital info is usually stored on the system’s hard drive forever.
Frank wins this thread!
Haha, I see what you did there.
Why do they need a demo mode on an installed pump?
