SANTA FE, N.M. — A New Mexico jury found "Rust" armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed guilty of involuntary manslaughter and not guilty of tampering with evidence on Wednesday after deliberating for about two and a half hours.
The 26-year-old faces up to three years in state prison and will be sentenced at a later date. A judge ordered that Gutierrez-Reed be taken into custody and held until her sentencing.
The nearly two-week criminal trial centered around the 2021 shooting on the "Rust" film set in which actor Alec Baldwin held a prop gun that fired a live round of ammunition, killing the film's cinematographer, Haylna Hutchins. The bullet also injured director Joel Souza.
During the prosecution's closing arguments on Wednesday, Kari T. Morrissey told the jury that Gutierrez-Reed "was negligent, she was careless, she was thoughtless."
Morrissey also said that following the fatal shooting, the 27-year-old armorer was more “worried about her career” and less about the victims.
When is Baldwin’s turn?
Wouldn’t it be a hoot if she gets the full 3 years of prison life with a bunch of new girlfriends and Baldwin skates with nothing at all? Gosh.
This moving to trial stage went completely under my radar. Is a trial also underway for Arec?
She couldn’t have done it without her fat headed libtard buddy don’t forget him
IF Baldwin doesn’t get 3 time that this is a miscarriage. she did not point the gun OR pull the trigger!
I can’t imagine any situation where an movie armorer would need real bullets.
I have not followed this case, so what follows is speculation only. I hope this is justice. I fear that this is absolution for Baldwin. The little people take the fall.
As a side note, with digital cameras and remote video display, why was anyone at the camera in a shooting scene? Line up your shot, get your focus and back away to operate the camera out if the line of fire. At worst then Baldwin shoots the camera.
Not a Baldwin fan and he was stupid to point a gun but its not his fault a live round of ammo was in the prop gun. Incompetent crew most responsible.
When’s the bigshot going to trial?
She is just a fall-guy.
She was never qualified to be an armorer.
The fault lies with whoever hired her.
(I’m looking at you, Arec Barwin.)
Apparently her father is a competent armorer, and she was a complete nepotism hire, totally unqualified other than by having good contacts.
I kind of felt sorry for Hanna. She was one of the first women armorers for a film with established actors.
Hanna is the daughter of Thell Reed, who is a very well known armorer in Hollywood. I guess she got careless and a little bit lazy on that movie set, so Hanna does have her share of the blame to answer for.
“but its not his fault a live round of ammo was in the prop gun.”
His fault. He didn’t check. “I didn’t know it was loaded” is no defense.
Involuntary manslaughter for Baldwin.
“I guess she got careless and a little bit lazy”
She was a doofus putting everyone at the set in danger.
“but its not his fault a live round of ammo was in the prop gun.”
Baldwin had a responsibility to check for himself. That’s Hollywood procedure and it’s crystal clear. Whatever happens the civil suit is going to ruin him. As Producer he’s responsible for everything that happens on his set.
L
There should never be any live ammo that produces a projectile . a movie set using blanks...
as far as the shooter who pulled the trigger, anytime you are handed a firearm the first thing you do is check to see if it is loaded.... and why did he cock it and aim it a the woman and then pull the trigger?
“Incompetent crew most responsible.”
If someone hands you a loaded gun and you shoot and kill someone with it who is most responsible?
