Mary Rittle says she experiences climate anxiety every single day. It may be a 55-degree January day in Chicago, when she notices that birds that should have migrated are still around. Or it could be after reading about how melting polar ice caps are endangering people around the world. Even her environmental activism can trigger anxiety because it reminds her of the urgent need for such work.
"This overwhelming sense of worry and fear and helplessness is very easy to get caught up in," says Rittle, who is a freshman at Loyola University Chicago. "I sometimes feel like, what could I possibly do? Why is no one taking this seriously? Why are lawmakers and corporations not taking this seriously?"
But Rittle's activism also helps relieve her anxiety, as does spending time in nature. Another anxiety-buster is having a community of like-minded students at Loyola University Chicago, where she is active in the Restoration Club and a new group, called "Eco-Warriors."
Climate anxiety — sometimes referred to as "eco-anxiety" or "ecological distress" — goes beyond concern for the environmental peril facing the planet because of global warming. It manifests itself much like other anxieties, with intrusive thoughts, sleeplessness, a racing heart or shortness of breath, and interference with relationships, work or school. It can include a range of feelings, from helplessness and sadness, to hopelessness and despair.
Experts say that distress is a normal human response to a crisis. But for young people, climate anxiety can be compounded by social media and other stressors.

Another unhinged leftist who wants to control the world, and needs some counseling and maybe some meds.
And stop watching the news.
Don’t put me in bondage to your fear and paranoia..
If only these young people at these Catholic institutions could find some sort of religion that taught them not to worry, and to have the faith of a mustard seed.
Tell Mary not to worry as she will do just fine in a chinese labor camp after America fails.
I think it’s more of much of that generation not knowing what real hardship even looks like and having a sense of entitlement that would have been viewed as a the mental disorder it really is a couple generations ago
Mary Rittle is not of sound mind; policy decisions should not be made on the basis of her delusions.
Oh ... forgot to look ...
It’s the “Not Catholic Distorter”.
They’ve been excreting gibberish for decades.
“This overwhelming sense of worry and fear and helplessness is very easy to get caught up in,”
What a pitiful existence.
I’m no longer shocked when I talk to young people and they claim to have anxiety about something or another. At first I chalked it up to them wanring5to be able to get “medical” Marijuana. But now they’re just brainwashed About various non issues.
Absent any genuine spiritual foundation, they were raised to worship our created world and not a creator. And now, they’re being told their “God” is dying. Oh, and white, Christian Americans, especially of the conservative male type, are to blame. Their angst is idiotic, but when this is considered, understandable.
I recall the Left’s similar “call to arms” throughout the Fauci Flu Debacle: “We’re all this together”. Democrat/Communists sure love their slogans — and chants — don’t they!
Self made distress isn’t healthy so don’t do it and grow a spine.
Nothing new. We went through the same thing in the 1970s with THE COMING ICE AGE crisis.
Important note: Anxiety from Man Made Global Warming puts them in the same predicament as the Gadarene Swine. So don’t be surprised when many of them rhetorically practice cliff diving.
Picture of an eco warrior meeting at the link. Mostly fat white girls. They should worry more about shedding some baggage than about saving the erf.
There’s one born every minute, Mary. Maybe you should stop believing everything that black rectangular box in your living room tells you.
Yep and it looks like a lot of them are scarfing food. And do I see plastic straws, plastic bags and styrofoam cups?
Note the accoutrements of the climate anxiety room…. big screen TV made from oil derived plastics, electric lights…mostly coal powered, the windows don’t appear to open so likely the room is air conditioned, the furnishings are made with petroleum chemicals. For idiots scared crapless by the prophets of fossil fuel caused eco doom, they are treating their anxiety by surrounding themselves with stuff made from evil oil.
The self inflicted misery of snowflakes brings me joy.
