Haven’t had any alcohol since I was diagnosed the Type II diabetes over 25 years ago. I did enjoy a Bloody Mary, or Margarita before dinner when I ate out.

You may remember Jeff Smith, the Frugal Gourmet. He would have guests over to the the Chaplain’s Pantry Restaurant and Gourmet Shop where he would cook a dinner for them. The cost was beyond my budget.

The Vesper Martini: Three measures of Gordon’s, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until it’s ice-cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon peel.

Original recipe from Ian Fleming’s James Bond in Casino Royal. I can’t recall if it was in the books, I read them as a kid but the shaking not just makes it ice cold (due to surface area contact with ice) but it also dilutes the drink; increasing the volume of water in the mix.

I was in a fancy steakhouse bar years ago, ordered a martini. The guy just shook vodka and ice. Might as well have ordered a vodka rocks.

Mrs. BBB333 and I went to Manny’s Steakhouse in Minneapolis about 3 summers ago.

I had a Heineken, $5.00, and Mrs. BBB333’s Ketel One martini was $25.00.

It was served in an ice cold large glass that was filled to the rim — really 3 or 4 martinis in one glass...

Great steaks!

San Francisco is a failed city so they availability might not last very long.

New York is not doing so well either but is not yet sunk to the level of San Francisco

Not only would you be paying for your drink(s), you’re also expected to go along with the notion that you’re paying for “atmosphere” and a “quality” public martini “experience”. For this, you will need a pair of martini goggles. After your first two, overall atmospheric conditions and quality will seem to have improved, and you’re gonna feel pretty damned good by the time you’re finished.

I remember getting martinis for $5 each, pay for two, third one on the house every Friday at the Pied Piper Room at the Sheraton Palace in San Francisco, buffet of snacks included.

My wife and I did that on New Years Eve, a nine course dinner that took a couple of hours or more. Ended up after a few years with 6 guests, it became a wonderful event everyone looked forward to.

If I have a drink, it is Scotch straight. I don’t care for mixed drinks, particulary sweet ones.

Now a tiny little Scotch costs too much. So I don’t drink.

Scotch and cigars is the way to go. I am an Isley guy myself with in your face peat. Lagavulin 21 the 1985 vintage is the Islay single malt by which all others are judged by. In 2006 it was $500 or more a bottle today it’s five grand the 1991 is good too but it’s not in the same league as the 85. You can get an 85 in The City it will make these $40 martinis seem like well drink prices. You don’t get sparklers or dancing girls with the glass it’s most assuredly quiet luxury. Worth it if you happen to be in The City and smoking a quality stick and not on a budget.
