GEN. GRANT’S DEPARTMENT: The Occupation of Selma, Ala., by Gen. Sherman Confirmed; Unfavorable Reports from Gen. Smith’s Cavalry Expedition (2/29/1864)

MEMPHIS, Tenn., Friday, Feb. 26.

Arrivals from Vicksburgh confirm the previous reports that Gen. SHERMAN had occupied Selma, Ala.

The reports from Gen. SMITH'S cavalry expedition are not so good.

Stragglers who arrived here to-day state that the rebel Generals FORREST, ADAMS, LEE and RODDY, concentrated their forces against those of Gen. SMITH, and forced him back with considerable loss. He had a severe fight at West Point, Mississippi.

The slow movements of Col. WARING's Division, consisting mainly of Pennsylvania and New-Jersey regiments, delayed the expedition some eight days, giving the enemy time to concentrate their forces.

It is reported that SMITH is slowly falling back toward Memphis, but the report is not generally believed, as little credit can be placed in the statements of stragglers.

Special Dispatch to the Cincinnati Gazette.

TUNNEL HILL, Ga., Friday, Feb. 26.

Early yesterday morning, Gens. BAIRD and CRUFTS crossed Tunnel Hill Ridge with their commands, and marching through the gap in Rocky Face range, drove the rebels from the Cleveland road into Rocky Face valley, thus turning a strong position the enemy occupied on the road from the town of Tunnel Hill to Dalton. Marching back again along the Cleveland road, our troops descended into Rocky Face valley, down which they swept, carrying everything before them, until they arrived at the hill near where the Cleveland road descends into Rocky Face valley. The hill was just on the south side of the road and left side of the valley, looking toward Dalton. Gen. BAIRD's command was on the right, and Gen. CRUFTS' on the left. It fell to Col. GROSE's Brigade to carry the hill I have mentioned, which they did with a shout and a volley that sent the rebels flying toward the town.
