2nd Dem faces recall effort in crime-ridden city after business owner endures violent robberies (Washington, D.C.)

Concerned Washington, D.C. residents and small business owners have banded together to oust a Democratic councilmember during an ongoing crime surge, marking the second recall effort launch in the district in months.

The recall effort against Councilmember Brianne Nadeau launched Tuesday over her relaxed criminal justice reform policies as the district grapples with skyrocketing crime in recent years, leaving some business owners in turmoil and many residents feeling unsafe. The announcement echoed a push to remove fellow Councilmember Charles Allen, which has attracted support from Democratic political fundraisers and congressional staffers who have helped raise over $56,000 for the campaign.

"The historic rise in crime is not just mere numbers; they represent shattered lives, eroded trust, and a community living in fear," the Nadeau recall effort's chairwoman, Diana Alvarez, said last week.

As crime has dropped in some major cities across the country, the nation's capital ended 2023 with a 26-year high in homicides with 274 murders, according to Metropolitan Police Department data. Robberies and thefts spiked 67% and 23%, respectively, and motor vehicle thefts nearly doubled.

The surging violence has caused some district businesses to move or shut down completely, including a nearly 10-year-old wine bar that closed in December after the restaurant faced five burglaries in five months. In Nadeau's district, a string of 10 robberies within a few weeks last year led to increased fear and hefty damages for some business owners and residents in the Adams Morgan neighborhood, ABC7 reported.

"I understand people's concerns about crime," Nadeau told WUSA9 in response to the recall campaign. The three-term councilmember said she's spearheading three bills to address public safety concerns, including legislation aimed at improving the city's 911 center and police cadet recruitment.

The voted for this, suck it up. Even if removed they will just vote for another easy on crime, corrupt democrat, so what is the point of the recall.

No sympathy. LMAO, Also I found it funny she lists improving the 911 call system as a crime bill, all that does is maybe speed up the time it takes to document the crime after it was committed.

911 is great for medicals services, for police it is just an efficient form of crime registry.

Having lived 3.5 years around DC (decade ago)...I’ll offer 3 observations:

1. Union Station is not a place to hang around. Just get there...get on your train, and get the heck out. Don’t eat from any place there, and avoid going there after dark.

2. This whole H-Street area is some weird area with various pubs/bars which were trying to get upscale while at the same time...was a neighborhood that I’d tell you to avoid. At one point, they were trying to get a tram fixed up to get people into the area, and present it as a ‘safe’ way of enjoying the neighborhood.

3. Finally, this Dem council gal....represents District One...Howard University is there, along with several neighborhoods which were ‘quiet’. At least around 2010...it was one of the three wards in the city that had ‘extra’ police-patrols. It (District 1) is at the edge of what I’d call ‘good-DC’ and ‘bad-DC’. If locals (88k in her district) want change...I don’t see how it’ll occur because they don’t have the revenue to hire another 500-odd police for the city.

It is just an odd town, and you don’t realize until you’ve lived there a year or two. Vast amount of low-level crime/corruption going on. Lot of employees for the city/school system....hired because of relatives having influence. Just a lot of incompetence bred into the system over the decades.

And if a business owner defends himself, he’s the bad guy.

Time for Congress to either rescind DC’s elected government or severely limit it’s pro-criminal, leftist laws and courts.

Looks like the barbed wire emplacements aren’t working in DC. Maybe call out the national guard? Wait, the national guard has no ammo in their magazines. Maybe build more tank traps in deep state clown world?

Never mind. Carry on, burglars.

Thanks for the insights. From what I recall, since 1973 Congress has allowed certain powers of government to be carried out by locally elected officials, and they call it “home rule”. Congress has the ability to revoke this status and I hope they do just that, and clean up the crime situation.

Good comments—the only thing I would add is that the DC police force has had a strong “Ferguson effect” going on for years.

They know the senior police administration does not have their back and they intentionally respond slowly to gunshot incidents—they do not want to face armed criminals in real time.

One police station that I am familiar with on Georgia Avenue can hear gunshots from the police station on many nights. They take their time eating doughnuts and finishing their coffee before venturing out to the mean streets outside.
