A Chinese green energy firm backed by Michigan's state government is tearing down trees to make way for a proposed electric vehicle (EV) battery plant designed to help the state meet its climate goals.
Gotion Inc. - whose parent company is Hefei, China-based Gotion High-Tech - said it has initiated its tree-cutting process this week to make way for its controversial EV project in Mecosta County, Michigan, which has received support from Democrats and climate activists, but opposition from Republicans and national security experts. The firm said the process is legal and pushed back against concerns raised by locals.
"It’s unfortunate that some extremist groups have targeted Mecosta County area businesses that want to work with Gotion Inc. to grow and strengthen jobs in our region," said Chuck Thelen, Gotion’s vice president of North American operations.
"A small minority of people continue to spread misinformation and manufacture lies about Gotion Inc., which invariably leads some residents to act out and make threats," he continued. "Despite these attempts at intimidation, the legal selective cutting of trees will start on Feb. 14."
Gotion first unveiled its development plans for the project in October 2022 alongside Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, agreeing to invest $2.4 billion in two 550,000-square-foot production plants and other supporting facilities across a large plot of land in Green Charter Township. Then, in August, the firm purchased 270 acres of land for the project, including land zoned for industrial, agricultural and residential use.
However, amid increasing opposition to the project over Gotion's ties to the Chinese Communist Party, the project has faced delays even as the Whitmer administration has earmarked nearly $200 million in taxpayer funding for the development. MI has a lot of trees.
Cutting trees is the least of the problem.
People act like we can not grow more.
I have been killing off trees the last couple of weeks for fire wood.
Every summer I mow off hundreds of seedings to keep my roads open.

You can’t *selectively cut* down trees to make way for a large building and manufacturing plant.
They ALL have to go, no matter what size or type.
Winter storms take down trees, too. We’ve gotten some good firewood from those.
EV battery manufacture is NOT going to help MI reach it’s climate goals. Manufacturing is too dirty for that.
Is it just a coincidence that their EV battery plant is being built in Green Township? I sincerely doubt it.

Why establish an automobile factory in Mecosta County?
Doesn’t make sense to me.
Most “new builds” are in high-pop areas where the labor poll is tried and eager to work.
Mecosta County demographics appear to be ‘anti-union’, too.
Oh, and Mecosta County has the 5th (of 83) highest number of arrests for meth-related activities in Michigan.
Trees are not the major concern here, the most water in 50 light years is and we don’t want it polluted by chicoms building a battery factory for worthless EVs’. Couple that with a temporary commie state government and you have a real problem.
And oh, your tax dollars are paying for it.
Where is a pack of Godzilla sized wolverines we you need them? Being Goshen (chicom) WHitler found another place to pollute instead of the place they cancelled, and once again we pay the price of an incompetent and corrupt rat/GOPe uniparty, this time at the state level.
Another reason also why term limits don’t work, the crooks will be gone and never accountable.
I believe this was something that was recently discussed in other posts on FR. Some states are, I believe, pushing for no ownership of property or development by foreign countries in this country. Not sure that’s exactly how it was worded. Any way, we already have foreign citizens illegally coming in here & now a Democrat is allowing/inviting China in to set up a corporation? Seems clear enough to me what is happening here & I doubt it would prove beneficial to true American interests in the long run. How much of this need occur until true ownership of our country is in question? This should have been stopped before it was even allowed to start.
I don’t see this Gotiron (alternate spelling) deal as being about cutting trees as more can be grown. It has been been said that we already have more forested area in the U.S. than in the early days of our nation. It should be viewed instead as the situation of foreign entities making inroads on our beloved country & this in my opinion should not be allowed. As a secondary concern, it is notable that EVs are becoming less desirable as we continue to learn of operating problems with them. The list is long if anyone cares to look. It makes about the same sense as getting a foreign company to come in here & set up a buggy whip factory. Anyone contemplating such a move also needs to take a hard lock at how succesful EVs have been in China.
