The steamship Columbia, Capt. BARTON, from New Orleans Jan. 30, arrived at this port Saturday afternoon.

No news of military or naval movements is reported.

Paymaster LAWRENCE had been robbed of $35,000 abstracted from a safe.

NEW-ORLEANS, Friday, Jan. 29, 1864.

New-Orleans is even more actively in the whirlpool of politics than when I last wrote, each day which brings us nearer to the day of election -- WASHINGTON's birthday -- making the race all the more exciting, as the contest narrows itself down to fewer but more prominent names. At present public attention seems to be centred most on what nomination the Free State body are going to make in convention for Governor. The most important names in that body seem at present to be Mr. District-Attorney WAPLES, Hon. T. J. DURANT -- the leader of the Extremists -- Judge HOWELL and MIOHAEL HAHN, Judge "WHITTAKER, the only other candidate of consequence, sot being yet understood as intending to let his name go for nomination in the convention, his friends appearing to prefer holding him in reserve, to run him Independently or not, as circumstances may justify, according to the choice that the convention may make.

As matters now stand, Mr. DURANT is reported to disclaim altogether any intention to allow his name to be put in nomination. This reserve is not understood, as it is generally supposed that lf, he did, his chances of being nominated would be excellent, and that if nominated he would be almost sure of being elected. In his absence, if Mr. WAPLES should be the nominee of the convention,
